Hi Ed.

You mentioned a PorteuX USB boot problem.

No such problem for me.
I did an EXT4 USB and a dual partition FAT32 / EXT4 UEFI setup and both worked great.

The Linux install script took an unusually long time to complete when making the EXT4 USB but I am ok with that.

Hi Vic,

I tried copying the files in the ISO to a FAT32 USB but booting it didn't work. I don't remember the problem and have kinda lost interest in it.

Hi fulalas,
I tried PorteuX with Xfce 4.12
bug:
porteux.cfg is not working:

Code: Select all

....
## This tells porteux which timezone settings you prefer
# timezone=America/Sao_Paulo
timezone=Europe/Berlin

## Set keybord to Brazilian Portuguese
# kmap=br
kmap=de
"kmap=de" has no effect, "us" remains

@Kulle, thanks for the feedback. The bug can be replicated and it will be fixed in 0.2 release. :)

I found my old Porteus 4 USB drive and a way to add PorteuX to it for testing on my UEFI Windows 11 Dell laptop since isolooping booting isn't supported.

I initially booted the porteux-v0.1-lxqt-1.2.0-x86_64.iso and it worked. In fact even the wifi worked so I added Firefox to it and it worked. But I'm not a fan of the lxqt DE so I tried adding my Porteus 5.0 Cinnamon DE to it. It booted but the icons on the task bar were mostly missing. What they represented appeared to work but finding where to click on them was difficult.
Image

I then tried the porteux-v0.1-lxde-0.10.1-current-x86_64.iso but it didn't boot it's DE and after signing on as root it couldn't find the startx command.

There appears to be 2 versions of each of the ISOs. The -x86_64.iso files and -current-x86_64.iso files. Since they all have the same "2 weeks ago" release date not sure which versions to test.

A question about the cfg file

In the porteus.cfg file I was able to make adjustments for myself,
for example

DEFAULT copy2ram

I can't find "DEFAULT" in porteux.cfg.
way out ?

Good eyes beny. I rebuilt the /porteux/base directory and rebooted and it worked. :Yahoo!: Thank you.

I'm gonna try the Cinnamon DE on it now. :x :)

excuse me
my question above was unnecessary!

I looked
https://wiki.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php?title=Menu

and added to porteux.cfg :
DEFAULT copy2ram

Well the Cinnamon DE with the lxde system yields a totally black screen so that's a no go.

The laptop fell on the floor with the USB stick plugged in and it is now bent 45 degrees. :o Not sure how much more testing I'll be able to try. :(

@Ed_P, in order to use a desktop environment from Porteus 5 you need the compatibility module, as described in the readme on Github page. I recommend reading the documentation on the Github page. It also explains the ISO file name conventions -- although there's room for improvement, for sure. And sorry for you USB stick :(

Thank you porteux. That is certainly an easier to read link than the one I saved, https://github.com/porteux/porteux/releases.

Thanks. I tried playing with it today and ended up formatting it. My main concern is the USB port on the laptop. If anything bad happens to my laptop I want to be sure my Windows Recovery USB and backup drives will work.

@Ed_P, PorteuX is now booting via grub. :)

Here is a small demonstration of the insanely fast boot time via grub using KDE on current base: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vSTCzPpPgU
