Old Dell Latitude D610 Wireless missing

With the grandkids all taking classes at home I'm trying to get an old notebook working for them. I've installed Porteus Cinnamon x586 on it for them and it is working except for the wireless part. The network only shows Wired. I tried some Broadcom fixes but they didn't help and looking at a lspci I see why.

Maybe missing firmware, you probably need the ipw2200 firmware package from Slackware.
What are the outputs of these commands (as root)?
lspci -knn
lsmod
dmesg | grep firmware

Looks like the firmware is missing
ipw2200: ipw2200-bss.fw request_firmware failed: Reason -2
[ 9.480093] ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: -2
You can try to download the ipw2200 firmware.

As root:

Code: Select all

getpkg ipw2200-fw
And copy the created xzm to your modules directory and reboot.

And how will you download the package without connected to the network?

The network only shows Wired
You cannot download from your x64 system coz it will download the 64 bit variant, while you need the 32 bit variant (I checked both their md5sums and they differ, so they are different pkgs)
Here's the direct link to the txz slackware package if you have to download from another system http://slackware.uk/slackware/slackware ... 1-fw-1.txz
Copy it to this system and then to a txz2xzm and copy it your modules dir.

Thanks jssouza.

I got an email from neko about the ipw2200 module that I tried and it failed. But I downloaded on my x64 system so that may be the problem.

To get files to the x86 system I copy them on my x64 system to a flash drive and plug it into the x86 system.

BTW With neko's file I renamed it 000-ipw2200.xzm so it would load before other modules. Could that cause a problem?

Added in 5 hours 48 minutes 49 seconds:
Good news, bad news.

The slackware file you pointed me to jssouza converted to a xzm on the x86 machine activates the wireless controller and I can see the router connections in the area. :Yahoo!:

For whatever reason the wifi connections refuse my password entry attempts. I put them in, view them to be sure they are correct, press enter and 30 secs later I get the password prompt again.

Check dmesg if you get any error message, esp. wrt the firmware loading.
Wild theory would be the driver (porteus 4 days) is old for the newer firmware (from slackware current). But I doubt it.

Try reloading the driver. As root:

Code: Select all

modprobe -r ipw2200 ; modprobe ipw2200
FWIW, provide also the output of uname -a

Thanks donald. A Porteus 3.x system does work on the Dell but Firefox 63.0.3-i686-1, which works on the Porteus 4 system, doesn't. I get "Firefox had a problem and crashed". I can't win.

Ed
Some options for experimenting:
another browser - pale moon?

If it has to be Firefox, then:
Take port 4 > try the firmware of port 3 if they are different.
If this doesn't help, change the kernel as well.
or try installing the CRDA thing.

My 3.x system proved to be a 3.0.1 RazorQT based system. I'll look for a 3.2.2 version.

And while the Firefox on the 3.0.1 system works it doesn't work completely, in that it doesn't support access to the Porteus forum, even via a Google search. So upgrading things on the old Dell means downloading things on the new Dell and copying them to a flash drive then copying them to the old Dell with Windows XP then modifying the grub2dos menu to boot them. At the rate I'm going the pandemic will be over before the old Dell is functional.

Thank donald.

The thumbdrive has a x86-64 port system on it.

Added in 57 minutes 21 seconds:
Cinnamon 3.2.2 - AF mode - wireless connections show. :good: Activating one brings up "Connection failed Activation of network connection failed." Went into Settings and added the password, retried, same message. :wall:

Added in 38 minutes 11 seconds:
3.0.1 system firefox error.

Code: Select all
