Hello, and Happy Holidays to all the community, I am sorry to post an issue on holiday, hope I can get some help, thanks.

I tried to install Porteus on a Virtualbox HD Virtual Machine, following this tutorial:
http://www.porteus.org/tutorials/37-ins ... rd%20Drive
And I got:
Missing operating system
FATAL: INT18: BOOT FAILURE

This is what I did:
0.- VIRTUALBOX CONFIGURATION:
On Virtual Box 6.1 I created a Porteus Virtual Machine (VM) with these parameters:
Linux 2.6/3x/4x (64-bit) (I also tested Other Linux 64)
RAM 8192MB
Processors 4
Boot Order Optic, Hard Disk (I also tested Hardisk, Optic)
Acceleration: VT-x/AMD-V, Nested Pagination, PAE/NX, Paravirtualization KVM
Video Memory 128MB
Graphics Controller: VBoxSVGA
EFI Disabled (And also EFI enabled)
IDE Controller
Master Secondary Ide: (Optical Unit) Porteus-KDE-v5.0rc1-x86_64.iso
SATA Controller: Porteus.vdi
Audio Host PulseAudio
Audio Guest ICH AC97

I ran the Porteus VM
On Porteus-5.0 64bit Screen
1. Graphics Mode > It runs from the ISO on the VM CD
Porteus 5 runs fine
1.1 I ran Porteus Installer
1.2 I Created and partitioned the Virtualbox Disk in /dev/sda1 (50GB) ext4
1.3 I refreshed and mounted the partition
1.4 I selected the target drive (/dev/sda1) and clicked next
1.5 I marked
* I understand and accept the warning above
* Install the boot loader
Clicked Next
1.6 Got the terminal open, I clicked to the message ok and enter
1.7 I got the message "Installation finished successfully"
1.8 I Exited Porteus VM, removed Porteus ISO from the VM Virtual CD and ran the VM but I got:
Missing operating system
FATAL: INT18: BOOT FAILURE

2. If I try to Boot from the first hd it jumps again to the first option 1. Graphics Mode that boots the ISO from CD

3.- I Enter into PLoP Boot Manager
HDA Partition 1
Load Profile Data
MBR Check
MBR Is valid
Checking Autosector
Warning
No Valid Autosector Signature
Continue Boot? (Y/N)
< If I type Y I get Black screen and no boot.

I checked with Dolphin, and Porteus files were copied to the VM Hard Disk, I see the directories boot lost+foud and porteus. Porteus.vdi has 850MB

I tried several times with different parameters and the same problem, I do not know what else to do. My objective is to have a Porteus workstation in a VM to run the standard Linux Graphics programs like GIMP, Inkscape, Krita and with Playonlinux/Wine to be able to run a couple a Windows programs that run fine in Playonlinux/Wine which I tested on another distro in a VM, but I would love to run them in Porteus KDE, it is simple, efficient, aesthetics and fast.
I appreciate a lot your help to make it run from Hard Disk persistently.
Thanks for your kind help
Regards
joejac

Hello joejac

Are you still using porteus 3.1? -- it might be a bit too old.

However, the following combination,(which i had at hand),work flawlessly.

Base OS on thumb drive - porteus 4 x86_64 XFCE
VirtualBox-5.2.20-v4.0-x86_64
Guest OS porteus 5 x86_64-XFCE installed from ISO-file to porteus_5.vdi
(within virtualbox) > reboot, no errors.

Hello and thanks Donald, happy holidays!

I am using other Linux distro as Host and Virtualbox 6.1 I already ran Porteus 5 LXQT as Guest and the same issue. I do not know if it is me, that I am missing something or is some issue with Porteus 5 RC1, I love KDE and I need the latest Playonlinux/Wine versions, I do not think outdated versions will work for me. What I do not understand is that both Porteus 5RC1 KDE and LSQT works fine booting from their respective ISOs on the VM CD.
I will test Porteus 4 KDE and post results.

Hmmm...virtualbox 6.1 works as well.

What I have done:
Boot porteus 4 (as host) > build vbox 6.1 module via v-box builder > reboot into "always fresh" mode
to avoid any possible interference with other modules/settings.

Activated the v-box module > start VM with ISO file > install to VM-vdi file > reboot..
..no problems.

All done in XFCE, maybe I should try the same with KDE...shouldn't make any difference, but
who knows..

2. If I try to Boot from the first hd it jumps again to the first option 1. Graphics Mode that boots the ISO from CD
i'm not sure i understand this.. the "Boot from the first hd" option is usually for: if you have porteus on a usb drive, you are booting the OS that is on the HD of machine you're using(usually windows)(not sure this even works properly)
in virtualbox, the Graphics Mode is the correct option, as long as the ISO has been ejected/disabled from the virtual CD drive (or the boot order set to HD first?)

Hello Donald, and thanks for your time testing.
I installed using your same parameters but with Porteus 4 KDE and the same error. Virtualbox in my host was installed using Synaptic package manager, on a Debian based host. Tomorrow I will make a short video, showing how I am making the installation, so it is going to be easy to spot any error on my part. I ran the Guest this time on "Always Fresh".

Hello ncmprhnsbl and thanks, It gives the error as soon as I detach de ISO from the VM and try to boot from the vdi disk. From the ISOs, any Porteus runs well in either mode, Graphics or Fresh.
Tomorrow I will post a video.
Thanks and regards.

Any reason why you create a gpt partition table? Why not msdos?

Thanks a lot jssouza!, :good: changing to msdos solved the issue, Porteus 4 XFCE booted and ran from HD. I will install Porteus 5KDE.

Reason why I choose gpt is in this doc and I quote: http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/disk-pa ... sk-layout/
Whether or not to use GPT
The GPT (GUID Partition Table) has been introduced with the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) standard, and it’s the new native layout on new architectures such as Itanium. The GPT layout can also be used on a normal PC with a standard BIOS with Linux as long as you use recent versions of the software involved. Unfortunately, Windows for PC cannot be installed on a disk using the GPT layout. But the 64bit versions of Windows can see partitions of a GPT disk, so you can have a second disk based on GPT as long as Windows is installed on a disk with a traditional msdos partition table.

If you are only using Linux on your computer you can switch to GPT as long as the software involved is recent enough to understand GPT. Unfortunately many Linux installers don’t let you choose which partition layout when the disk is formatted. For instance Redhat/Fedora just automatically formats disks with the most appropriate system, depending on how big the disk is. The solution is to use SystemRescueCd to make the partitions yourself using tools such as Parted, GParted of GDisk. Then you can install Linux and you will have to select the option that allows you to preserve the existing partitioning and customize the disk layout.

The GPT layout offers many advantages over msdos partition tables:

It can address disks which are larger than 2TB (2048 GB)
You can have more than 4 primary partitions in a native way
It’s more robust: the partition table is redundant
It supports a wide range of partition types since it’s encoded on 16 bytes
Anyway, you should keep a traditional msdos partition table if you want to have Windows installed because Windows for PC cannot boot from GPT disks. If your disk is smaller than 2TB and if you don’t want to have more than 4 partitions then you don’t really need to move to GPT. The Linux Logical-Volume-Manager is a good method to organize data on your disk and it only uses one partition to store the LVM Physical-Volume.
I have been changing distros many times in the past, this takes too much time, I need to have a final distro for my needs, and not to make more changes, would be ideal if:
1. Runs fine latest versions of programs like GIMP, Inkscape, Krita, not outdated ones,
2. Runs smooth Playonlinux/Wine in order to run a couple of programs with no equivalents in Linux
**Please let me know if Porteus runs fine Playonlinux/Wine and if there is a module (xzm) to install it, I have not seen it in the Vim mirror.
3. Compact not bloated
4. Efficient and Fast
5. Aesthetic, pleasant and easy to use
6. Easy to Backup/Restore full OS and Files, without making any installation
7. Rolling distro would be ideal, but Porteus is not a Rolling Distro.
The distro that meets at least all points 1 to 6 would be my ideal distro, I guess Porteus can meet most of the requirements.

I appreciate any additional advice on Porteus that allows me to meet points 1 to 6 easily.
Thanks to all for your kind help.
Best regards
joejac

Thank you for the link Ed_P, you managed to run Porteus in GPT, you are developers, I am not, that post is very technical for my little knowledge as well as the related links, too advanced.
1. So I understand Porteus is limited to 2TB hard disks that is the limit of msdos, right? Is there a workaround for this limitation?
2. 2 months ago I installed Porteus 5 on a 2GB pendrive with applications that in other Linux would take no less than 6-8GB, including the OS, that is remarkable.
3. In my opinion, Porteus 5 has the best-looking implementation of KDE, simply gorgeous, I love it.
4. I do some web design, and I need a reliable OS that runs Playonlinux/Wine, I love the concept of Porteus modules, I will look into the forum to see if I find a way to install Playonlinux.

Oh, I can ensure you joejac I am no developer. In fact I had never used a Linux system until a year prior to that posting. My history is all in Windows. But I am a hacker and persistent in getting what I want, which I think you are also. :) Now that you have Porteus booting you can convert the drive to GPT like I did.

That is rather the limitation of an MSDOS partition table. Using a GPT partition type on the hard disk, and then creating an EFI partitioning scheme on this GPT, you can have more than 2TB space.
This was the reason I asked why have you chosen GPT, when
1. You have allocated only a 2GB space
2. You have only created one EXT4 partition on the hard disk after that.

I thought you would rather have Porteus up and running on your VM ASAP and continue further, instead of being stuck on the technicalities of partitionings and file systems.

Thanks Ed for your advice I will keep your link in mind.
Hello jssouza, The video was just a test matching Donald's VBox 6.1 parameters, so somebody could show me my "mistake", jssouza I appreciate a lot you did it. In 2015 I could not switch to Porteus for the same reason, not been able to boot from hard disk. I dislike a lot mixing Windows with Linux, but I have no choice and the way Porteus works will allow me to do it and restore easily If I damage or make unreliable the installation with Wine. Also, Porteus efficiency will allow me to use a less energy-hungry computer, I plan to move, and energy will cost 100 times more in other countries. I spend too much time on a computer and I need a comfortable and aesthetic environment without complexity, in other KDE distros I waste time trying to adapt the desktop.

I will test the Linux graphics programs and Playonlinux with the 2 Windows programs on Porteus 5 and if all works fine I will be working mainly with Porteus on the virtual machine until I move and buy the new hardware, at that time I will reinstall the host with Porteus and will not use virtual machines.
Thanks and best regards
