[SOLVED] Printing in Porteus 4.0 not working

Post#1 by rab135 » 27 May 2019, 20:36

Hello there,

I'm quite new to porteus and currently trying to set it up on a 32gb USB drive.

Right now I am stuck with getting my printer up and running. I downloaded the most up to date modules from this thread: Printing and scanning for Porteus (The main one and the additional module set for Xfce that was posted on 21 Apr 2018)

When I search for network printers in 'system' > 'print settings' my epson XP-425 is found without issues under (IP: 192.168.0.117:515 and queue: PASSTHRU). Drivers don't give me any issues either.

Now it gives me the option, to print a test page - and here is where everything breaks down:
'Print Error' and the Printer State in the Settings window is stuck at 'Idle - Can't detect file type'

I thought it might have something to do with the paper format so I switched from 'US Letter' to A4 (which I'm using) but to no avail. Same thing happens with any other document I want to print.

Not sure if it's related but I also cannot reach localhost:631 in my browser - it just returns a 'Not Found' message. (I thought I would get a normal CUPS interface but I don't know if it is different on porteus)

I also checked the troubleshoot.txt that 'print settings' gives me but admittedly, I have no idea what to search for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Printing in Porteus 4.0 not working

Hi rab135,
1) try to rename 007- to 07- of all printing modules and copy to base folder if they are not there.

Or run these commands in the terminal

Code: Select all

su
toor
cache-module
# or
glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas
reboot Porteus and try to open any notepad or LibreOffice and print your test page.

2) boot up Porteus in Always Fresh mode and try again via 'system' > 'print settings' install your printer.
Don't press on test page in print settings. Open any notepad or LibreOffice and print your test page.

3) can you share your /var/log/cups/error_log ?

Thanks.

Printing in Porteus 4.0 not working

Post#3 by rab135 » 28 May 2019, 20:31

I renamed the modules, reinstalled the printer and gave it a shot with libre office instead of using the test page. My printer just sounded like it was dying for a couple of minutes but eventually it spat out a page - now it's working fine without a delay.

Thanks a bunch Blaze! :punk:

I'm a bit surprised that it was such an easy fix - how does changing a single digit make such a difference?

The order of loading modules plays a big role, so there are problems with printing.
