I can substitute Openbox for XFCE, but that's not going to have any effect on the operation of xorg. There is no problem with the desktop environment, just the video driver.

I booted with openbox substituted for xfce; no substantive difference, although a couple of icons in the notification area displayed. I installed Porteus to hd in VESA mode, made a script to save dmesg; Xorg.0.log; and the result of lspci -v on flash drive, and used the Porteus Settings Center to make it autorun at startup -- X Server still fails with "[drm] failed to load kernel module "savage"".

One by one? Thanks for assembling the list. I am unclear as to the nature of the differences among different distributions and the single post I cited above is the only reference I can recall seeing to anyone getting any Linux with a GUI to work with the S3 ProSavage DDR, so old Ubuntu drivers seem the likely choice -- though the machine has never successfully run Ubuntu variants I tried.

I couldn't download a couple of those; of the rest, most reverted to VESA graphics because of version mismatch between the modules and X Server, one reverted to VESA graphics because it couldn't load a driver.so file, and the rest failed with the characteristic lagging and failure to draw GUI elements. I removed xf86-video-savage from xorg and recompiled it, then added each module in turn to /base and tried to boot in Always Fresh.
