Set up different COLUMNS for virtual console

How to set the COLUMNS and ROWS for the virtual consoles (VT) ? (For Port 3.1 and newer)
Older Versions had the cheatcode VGA=ask. .. but for some reason only for a short time during boot the VT got switched to the selected VGA. .. and prior logging into VT it got switched back to on some Displays unbearable tiny 160 Columns.
And newer Port Versions no longer list VGA= as cheatcode in its cheatcodes.txt
