OpenBox setup Help

I want to see if Porteus 3.2 will run only OpenBox and I know OpenBox is in 002 so I remove 003 so at that point I thought it would work but wrong. It did boot up but it didnt run OpenBox so could it be miss something or do I need to run something to set it up so it will work? I do know Kiosk dose run OpenBox so I thought I could get Porteus to do the same.

You can see OpenBox is in there and this is 002 files list.

I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

I booted in text mode and after login I type startx. Here is the output will it in to xterm I thought it might open up OpenBox as a desktop. Is OpenBox missing some modules to make it work as a desktop?

I check with USM and it found these.
openbox-menu-0.8.0-x86_64-1_slack.txz was found in slackonly [not installed]
openbox-themes-1.0.2-noarch-1_slack.txz was found in slackonly [not installed]

user-settings-openbox-14.1-noarch-3dj.txz was found in salix [not installed]

yep thats it... a grey background with an open xterm..
if you rightclick outside the xterm window, you get the menu >terminal(xterm),filemanager(mc), editor(mcedit), web browser(lynx)
if you scroll on the background, this switches between four desktops..
this is an extremely basic setup on which to build a desktop with you prefered applications..

here is an example of a more complete setup with spacefm, lxterminal, tint2, etc..(for 3.1(do have a 3.2 version(s) in the works)
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=75&t=3988
here is an old tutorial that might help setting up openbox: (might do an updated version sometime..)

yes if your using it with 3.1, no if your using it with 3.2, because of mismatching networkwork-manager-applet..
i'll upload a new 3.2 (beta)version later today..

I just try to compile sources code and I keep getting error messages. I use sbopkg to build SlackBuild files. So what I'm thinking, I will do a full install of Slackware 14.4 x86_64 then that help with the error I been getting and it might do a better job on building. Here is a list what I'm trying to build.

Code: Select all

libfm-extra/
lxmenu-data/
menu-cache/
obapps/
obbrowser/
obconf/
obkey/
obmenu/
obmenu-generator/
obsession/
obshutdown/
openbox/
openbox-menu/
openbox-simple-theme/
openbox-themes/
perl-File-Which/
perl-IPC-Run3/
perl-IPC-System-Simple/
perl-Module-Build/
perl-PAR-Dist/
perl-Probe-Perl/
perl-Test-Script/
perl-data-dump/
perl-extutils-makemaker/
perl-file-basedir/
perl-file-desktopentry/
perl-file-mimeinfo/
perl-linux-desktop-files/
python-xlib/
vala/
wxPython/
I try to download from Slackonly but the site shows Server not found and I hope it is temp.
