I don't have issue with icons.
Looks like your changes are broken icons

Fair enough, and good to hear, but the "Downloading: update-porteus-live DONE" and "Downloading: update.txt DONE" messages imply otherwise.

New scenario.
After closing lid for a period of time, reopening it and the task bar icons don't work. Files Manager, terminal, Menu's Shutdown option doesn't open.
Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work.
Alt+PrtScr+ B U S takes me to the boot log screen and relogging in as guest yields: I/O error, dev loop1
Alt+PrtScr+R works.

Another Alpha 2
Simple script, run after making the two system changes:
Code: Select all
if [ -d /tmp/mod/ ]; then
rm -rf /tmp/mod
fi
mkdir -p /tmp/mod
# copy the modified files
# For 12 hr clock & xed with line numbers
cp -a -p --parents /home/guest/.config/dconf/user /tmp/mod/
cp -a -p --parents /home/guest/.config/xed/accels /tmp/mod/
ls -R /tmp/mod/
read
dir2xzm /tmp/mod /tmp/$MOD.xzm && rm -rf /tmp/mod
echo
lsxzm /tmp/*.xzm
yields this "This is not a valid module" error when trying to activate it.
Any ideas?

Thanks
beny.
I tried your mksquashfs suggestion but got the same result.
I also tried creating a save.dat file and booting with the changes=EXIT: cheatcode and after making some simple changes and rebooting the changes aren't present.
Added in 19 hours 35 minutes 14 seconds:
save.dat problem due to my grub2 menu error.

Yes. Need new glasses.
Code: Select all

1. Option 3's directory is
wrong!

2. Some changes are only effective if activated when booting. Such as:
Code: Select all
# For 12 hr clock & xed line numbers :)
cp -a -p --parents /home/guest/.config/xed/accels /tmp/mod/
cp -a -p --parents /home/guest/.config/dconf/user /tmp/mod/
# For FireFox icon on task bar :)
cp -a -p --parents /home/guest/.config/cinnamon/spices/[email protected]/* /tmp/mod/
A long learning process.
Now on with alpha2 testing.
New question. When I boot without a save.dat my nemo /home/guest/ folder displays 7 folders; Decktop through Videos, but when I boot with a used save.dat I only have the Desktop folder. Awkward for saving screen shots and downloads. Something else I'm screwing up?
