im trying to make my start menu icons centered but it does not work when i select
panel appearance .. center zone or even if i select right zone
any idea what could be wrong?

It is supposed to be like in Win11? Then you have to enable "Panel edit mode" and drag items from left (red) and drop to center (green).

Which desktop? If using XFCE (whiskermenu) , you can make it popup under current mouse position by invoking it with:
