I have a scanner installation porteus v4.x on another linux box a toshiba which works well. I have been using it since my my asus v4.x failed me. This is why I am still in operation scanner wise.

and yes, you need 07-printing-lxde-lxqt-openbox-xfce-x86_64 module if you use these DE.

There is great progress here, and we are almost there. Now in the simplescan application my printer has appeared.

The usual procedure to install network scanner is:

root@porteus:/opt/brother/scanner/brscan4# ./setupSaneScan4 -i
root@porteus:/opt/brother/scanner/brscan4# brsaneconfig4 -a name=scanner model=MFC-7860DW ip=192.168.0.139
"scanner" is already registered.
root@porteus:/opt/brother/scanner/brscan4# brsaneconfig4 -q | grep scanner
* MFC-7860DW   [  192.168.0.139]  scanner
root@porteus:/opt/brother/scanner/brscan4#

And everything seems OK.

Trying to activate avahi, here is the error message:

Solved.

All that was finally needed was to select the brother printer at least one time from the dialog box list of simple-scan.

The additional error I had made was to omit your second avahi command, the one for avahidnsconfd:

I have been using simple scan under porteus 5.0 for some time. It will take some time finding my printer, but it finds it.

Simple scan under porteus 4.x was a lot faster. How could this be?

I had to reinstall the brother printer. There is no need to start avahi with:

root@porteus:/home/guest# [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.avahidnsconfd ] && /etc/rc.d/rc.avahidnsconfd start
Starting Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD DNS Server Configuration Daemon:  /usr/sbin/avahi-dnsconfd -D
root@porteus:/home/guest#

You just have to be patient until the simple-scan proposes the printer in the simple-scan pop-up window. Which could be long.
