BCM4311 in Porteus XFCE 5.0rc3

Post#1 by rchase » 22 Feb 2022, 05:22

The perennial problem with Porteus -- no wi-fi. fossapup64 can; why can't Porteus? Am I correct that a module has to be compiled to use BCM4311 wi-fi for Porteus 5.0rc3 and that none is included or uploaded? It would be nice if this card could be detected and the appropriate driver loaded automatically rather than have to request a module be compiled, but I'm asking. Please tell me what I have to do to get wi-fi working.

P.S. Correction -- fossapup64 can't -- it thinks it can but doesn't establish a useable connection.

beny, I was delayed in responding because I first could not install Firefox using the browser tool and then discovered that I had lost half the text because the terminal's "Select All" does not function correctly.

Ed P, I never did get wi-fi working on that Mac in Porteus 5.0, but those instructions were specific to rc1 anyway, were they not?

hi rchase in terminal insmod or modprobe
/lib/modules/5.12.14-porteus/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/broadcom/b43/b43.ko show you something or not you can see if the module is loaded with lsmod, but you have this module link that have to load before the b43.ko, depends: mac80211,ssb,bcma,cfg80211,cordic,led-class,rng-core but will you try if work first the insmod or modprobe.

hi rchase don't blame me this is the list of the modules involved into the b43 task: the kernel is a different one but the steps are the same
bash-5.1# insmod '/lib/modules/5.16.3-beny/kernel/drivers/mmc/core/mmc_core.ko'
bash-5.1# insmod '/lib/modules/5.16.3-beny/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.ko'

bash-5.1# i suppose that you have the changes directory on because the work to do is a huge one and you have to have driver loaded at boot everytime

the dmesg give me a lot of error i think because i don't have the b43 device on board but the last line of dmesg tell me this:
[ 2406.201287] Broadcom 43xx driver loaded [ Features: PNLS ]

I issued corresponding insmod commands -- all of those files exist. I renamed b43_blacklist.conf and broadcom_blacklist.conf. I still have no wireless device.

Yes, mmc_core is built in. I used Blaze's b43 module (from rc2?) and it worked; I now have both network devices operating.

I seem to have wireless using the b43 module you posted in 2020 (viewtopic.php?p=78177#p78177) on both my Mac (BCM4312) and Dell Vostro 1000 (BCM4311); believe I was ignoring the necessity of modifying the blacklists; the one for b43 was blacklisting b44, I believe, which exacerbated the problem by wiping out Ethernet too. I'm puttering around with old disk drives, but I'll test your module and kernel as soon as I get done. Please elucidate; do I need to blacklist modules? Any thoughts on Porteus-v5.0rc3 x86_64 bug reports -- can I just download the latest Debian version and use the command line to turn it into a txz package? I seem to recall the necessity of doing something with the Desktop file to get it to launch.

Blaze, using your kernel, vmlinuz, and wireless module, I had no network devices. I didn't know whether 64bit.config was functional or just a report so I didn't put it anywhere; you didn't mention blacklisting and there were no .config files in modprobe.d.

My module is have /etc/modprobe.d/broadcom_blacklist.conf according to https://github.com/antoineco/broadcom-wl

Code: Select all

# lsxzm broadcom-sta-6.30.223.271-k5.16.9-x86_64-1bl.xzm | grep blacklist
/etc/modprobe.d/broadcom_blacklist.conf

Code: Select all

# Default driver for supporting broadcom wifi chipsets is proprietary broadcom-sta (wl.ko).
# Please refer to 'Broadcom wifi under Porteus' HOWTO
# in case when you want to use the opensource drivers (b43/brcmsmac):
#
# Blacklist opensource drivers they wont interfere with wl.ko:

blacklist ssb
blacklist bcma
blacklist b43
blacklist brcmsmac
