Hey everybody

I can understand someone being upset after paying a lot of money for software like Windows and expecting solutions to problems or shortcomings.

I like Linux (free) stuff because it is like Lego things in software form. Fun.

Let's all have fun here in Linux land.

Vic
Even kids with Legos can be ambitious (I was one).

Porteus inspires me to dream. That's part of the fun.

I hope that could be part of Linux. Not shooting each others' ideas down with no argument, "just because."

That said, I take things too seriously.

I post the quote here, in case someone misunderstood.

i, for one, value your input here.
and i agree that a rethink of the whole installer situation is a worthwhile endeavor.
your rewrite and appimage-like self-extracting iso has given me some ideas around expanding it into a proper universal installer.. (that is beyond me doing myself ;) )
(that the files: Installer-for-*.com has always been a misnomer is one point, since they're more of a "make bootable" for legacy bios and don't really "install" anything)
that Ed has managed to annoy you, signals your sanity to me, if anything :)

You looking to reinvent the Easy2Boot and Rufus apps? These installers have been around a long tim, are easy to use and very useful.

Any plans for a Portues 5.1 or 5.02?

no :)
i meant universal in the sense of being host agnostic(as much as possible), but very specifically for porteus and it's style of frugal install.

an alpha 5.1 might appear soon ;) (but it'll remain alpha until slackware 15.1 is released) ...5.02 ..maybe.. more likely the 5.01 isos will get "refreshed" with a new kernel and updates first.

Interesting about Gparted. I'll have to see how they handle esp in their canonical bootable tool distro. Note that Gparted Live comes in two versions: the typical iso, and also the ZIP, which uses the same installer method as Porteus! (unarchive, copy files to target) You have to hunt just a little to get the zip version, but it's there. I'll have to see how they do the esp on themselves!

But I get you about installers. It's easy, just use "method B" as seen here! (actually it is, just wordy)
https://gparted.org/liveusb.php

Rando note: When partitioning manually for a custom Porteus / Gparted Live, and because my machines are near dumpster-fodder, I always use a 512mb fat32 as the bootable partition, nothing smaller. I got tired of fighting over that size in bios/uefi arguments, so now 512mb and stop worrying since I no longer run 1gb cards or hd's.

Also some handy tips that *might* affect Porteus as well, such as running makeboot.sh on older distros like Debian Etch (syslinux breaks) yadda yadda. My < .02cents. :)
That's a UNIX book - cool. -Garth
