Can you let me know when you get update-base finish?
Now.
I'm going to VA Doctor today so when I get back I will test it. Thanks for all the hard work you did.
I just finish the update-base and I had no problem doing it and it took about 30 minute to do it.

I will do it about once a month more if need to.

Code: Select all

ls -l /mnt/sdb1/porteus/base
total 793880
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root  88248320 Sep 26 14:16 000-kernel-5.14.3.xzm

I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

I updated an old version of nemisis with eerie's update base script, with only 4GB memory PC , in two steps.

Run the script to get full system update;
copy changes folder in memory to fixed disk;
make a xzm module of this folder;
copy pkg folder from /var/cache/pacman to fixed disk;
reboot pc base_only ;
activate changes folder done earlier;
copy pkg folder to /var/cache/pacman;
run the script again to update base in a location in fixed disk;

update completed.

Using that nemisis from 19th. works normally. found execute permission not assigned to owner for many .sh files.

Here is the link for nemisis-new current version..

Ed_p, would be happy if you can try "create live usb" from ISO, if have time and a spare USB disk.

ISO will boot to login with a sound file, vintage XP style.

Donald's on-off-conky.sh, ansiweather are available. Please change city/country entry in ansiweather script or ansiweatherrc.

Cheers and thanks to all.

Cheers

Hi Raja.

Thanks for reporting.

I'm not sure why this step of copying/restoring the pkg folder.
The script keeps track of the installed packages through the pacman database,
Then compares that full database against the reduced set of each module, then updates needed packages for each base module.

Did you kept a .log of those .sh files ?

As a sidenote, althought it is doable, I'm not sure updating packages from 2 years ago is a good idea, giving the Archlinux rolling model. Keep in mind that during that time, some packages have been superseded by others (and I am not referring to the version number, but to their functionality).
However, your test is further proof of pacman's robustness. (I must confess I did some test with older releases too while developing the script :) )

P.S.: As it seems you are interested in generate .ISO's I will look into your "create live usb" and see what happens :)

Eerie, I followed those steps, since, script was repeating the act of downloading packages,updating system etc...Basically I do not like updating frequently, I install all apps I need in one go & pull the curtain down. Every other day, arch will change something, the trouble is not worth..

I found screenshot is not working after update.Same with GLRP.

script was repeating the act of downloading packages,
If you have updated modules, then nothing is downloaded. But that won't last for long because Arch is a rolling distro and packages are continuously being updated.

New dependencies are required every now and then as it happens to Porteus itself, but you can include using the relevant pkgAdd variable.

Eerie.

/etc/porteus/*.ver ....Don't you think the script should copy the updated version info in base to this folder.? In mine it is still reflecting only old version info.

What is this used for?

Unless I'm missing something, It seems to be a control version method included by ncmp in his building scripts, but nothing else.

I don't think they add any extra functionality at all and they can be safely removed. Again the Arch model is the exact opposite to Slackware one where this would be useful.

Working with the last version of Nemesis, always getting the same error message each time that I try to start a module made with pman:

[porteus ~]# plank
plank: /usr/lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.34' not found (required by plank)
[porteus ~]# /usr/lib/firefox/firefox
/usr/lib/firefox/firefox: /usr/lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.34' not found (required by /usr/lib/firefox/firefox)
[porteus ~]#

Any solution for that?
Thanks.

Was supossed to reply that plank doesn't work because (according to my notes), it requires a login-manager.

Then I've executed plank -d to see what comes in from the terminal:

Code: Select all

$ plank -d
[DEBUG 20:20:30.691739] [GLib] unsetenv() is not thread-safe and should not be used after threads are created

Funny thing is, after realizing that you ran it as root, I did the same and got it working.

:)

I'm running MATE and just updated with the update-base script.

francois, plank-0.11.89-4 works with my last updated ISO,

In arch, we have to give these commands to start plank,( wayland.xx in /etc/xdg)

Under root,

Code: Select all

[porteus guest]# glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/

[porteus guest]# ldd --version
ldd (GNU libc) 2.35

warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
Written by Roland McGrath and Ulrich Drepper
and start plank under guest,

Code: Select all

XDG_SESSION_TYPE=x11 plank
Desktop image with plank,

Image

sameway, plank version 0.11.89-3, works with current portix ISO.

Thanks for your quick answer that I have read the day you issued it. I wanted to have more time before coming back.

I would like have a functional install with nemesis with the possibility of building additional modules like to get a basic installation:
plank
chromium
firefox
printing and scanning modules
foxit pdf reader
libreoffice
smplayer

This situation with being root in nemesis dissapears when in subsequents bootups in without changes mode, but I am unable to build modules or simply to install packages.

I see that your portix media center offers these softwares and many others, except the printer package. Have you updated your portix installation since last year?
