1.- initd is long tested, bugfree,
2.- unix is not even trying it,
3.- bsd never looked at it,
4.- kernel is not by linus,
and.... and...

lets put off that thing until it is bug free!
Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).
The Porteus Community never sleeps!

Very good. I will install lxde to work on stage 002. I have it running nicely here. Time to begin porting all the GUI stuff now.

Congratulations brokenman. This is real kiss technology. :D

Everything finally works fine, very fine. Working on plasma-desktop (kde5 minimalist desktop). On top of base module:
- xorg server is 34.7 mb
- plasma-desktop 18.9 mb
- chromium is 81 mb

The linux box runs smoothly on my msi340x, which was running with difficulty and often freeze with kde and google-chrome under porteus.

My ISO is about 170MB with basic lxde. The 001 + 002 modules contain a lot of libraries that are needed to build further. So my question is ... do we leave it as a basic system i.e. just enough to get it booting and let users build it, or make it the same as porteus (but with an apps module) so everything just works?

Maybe we can build it up to one basic desktop environment with xorg-server as a separate package (should it include xorg-xrandr? and other packages) and keep some of the archlinux philosophy where those who would like a different DE or window manager will be incitated to build their own with the arch linux wiki. Thus motivating people to learn the system, and for us just providing support with arch linux wiki documentation as a basis. This would be a DIY distribution.

In parallel, we could offer some modules for the most important packages kde, xfce ... , firefox, chrome ... , cups, system-config-printer ... , office suite. But as pman works fine, why bother to produce a great array of prebuilt packages. Let us have a few, but mainly stimulate people to build their own.

Maybe some

Code: Select all

efforts
are more important to adapt pman to AUR, which provides a great array of additional packages, that almost match debian pasture.

Nemesis could be a interesting tool to get people to appreciate understand porteus, its module structure and its package manager. After all, even with porteus, what we like is when people are able themselves to build their packages. Porteus structure is so intuitive and easy to work with when you know it, nemesis is an interesting offspring.

hi brokernman if you make a stable core of archeus maybe with x the user can do the other task install a desktop manager like xfce4 or lxde,i have make some packages with abs but not in aufs environment yet i start to build a new linux zen kernel with aufs to discover if there is a different approch to live system, maybe i am wrong so..... it is very easy to use pacman, for a very lazy user, but abs it is like sbopkg.

Concerning the rolling release distribution, here are interesting comments from Igor (from a private message that he sent me):
Excuse me if misunderstood the question.
from: https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=About_Manjaro
"However, Manjaro boasts a few extra features of its own, including:
A simplifed, user-friendly installation process
Automatic detection of your computer's hardware (e.g. graphics cards)
Automatic installation of the necessary software (e.g. graphics drivers) for your system
Its own dedicated software repositories to ensure delivery of fully tested and stable software packages, and
Support for the easy installation and use of multiple kernels."
+ https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?titl ... nd_Servers

There might be interesting features in manjaro.

It would be nice that he tested nemesis.

I am of the opinion that it would be great if people built their own systems. But these people are few and far between. I respect the arch principals of "Don't give a man a fish, but teach him how to fish" but in all honesty we have already seen how people don't even get as far as reading documentation. We can hardly expect these people to build there own desktop. We can make the very base modules available for those that want to customize on their own, but it would also be nice to give a full working system where much of the common stuff is automated (as in manjaro).

I also do intend to write a wrapper for yaourt package manager when 002 is finished.

I haven't checked them out. In any case a wrapper needs to be written so packages are automatically converted to porteus compliant modules.

With this last version of 02112015 with lxde what are you expecting us to test? I am able to run xfce desktop, but not able to run plasma (kde5) which stops when its time to boot in the X environment.

The desktop is just a minimal graphical environment on which you can build other desktops. It is a good indication of what packages will ship.
