Nemesis update- v23.07 (2023-07-13)

Post#1 by ncmprhnsbl » 15 Jul 2023, 02:22

There were enough changes to warrant a new ISO, so here it is:

ISOs available here: ISO Downloads :dl-green:
Modules here: Module Downloads :dl-green:
05-devel here: 05-devel Download :dl-green:
Kernel and crippled sources: Kernel Downloads :dl-green:

Changelog:
  • Packages updated to 2023-07-13 (and mirrorlists set to corresponding package archive by default)
  • Kernel updated to version: 6.4.2 (Reminder: neko's kernel builder app works with nemesis if you want a newer or different or tuned to your hardware kernel)
  • Nemaster upgrade script by M.Eerie updated. (command: nemaster)
  • initrd.xz rebuilt as x86_64 with updated libs and bins (busybox-1.36.1)
  • cheatcode noload now works. (everything is just unmounted after openrc finishes it's boot processes... would like to find a better solution somewhere in the openrc boot process)
  • The util-linux issue with live de/activation has been resolved, nothing is now in the IgnorePkg in pacman.conf
  • Added xreader(pdf viewer) and hynotix(free tv and movie player) and deps to cinnamon
  • Added and refined more 'functions' and aliases to /usr/share/porteus/porteus-functions sourced by bashrc. Type 'wtf' in a terminal for an overview.
Notes:
  • Elsewhere in the forum there has been discussion about newer kernels(>6.3) and unclean unmounting of the unionfs at shutdown. Afaics, it seem that Nemesis may never(or not for a long time) have had clean dismount at shutdown. Unlike slackware Porteus, that uses sysvinit and a statically built init binary that is copied to and can function in the initrd enviroment at shutdown, Nemesis uses openrc-init (which cannot be compiled statically, afaia), therefore "works" differently. My suggestions, pending some better solution, are: 1. avoidance: if you have plenty of ram use copy2ram cheatcode or 2. ostrich: (uninformed opinion) the non-contiguous fs errors probably won't harm your puppies greatly, and repairing with fsck or defragging some other way, excessively will wear your usb drive faster. (spinning HDs: see 1. avoidance)
  • The pkg repos are set to the archive repos at the date of build(2023-07-13).. 'mirrorlist-toggle' will toggle between this and the rolling repos
As always, my recommendation is to only use the rolling repos for certain pkgs(eg. web browser) or if you are attempting a base upgrade..
  • Likely something i've forgotten

Nemaster upgrade
Please use the script posted on the forum, as the version included in the ISO / core module contains bugs.

@ncmprhnsbl Sorry for the confusion, as the code I sent via PM was not fully tested. The one posted on the forum is (although the strip routine is incomplete). My apologies

Note to administrators: It's been more than 30 days since the script was first published, so I can no longer modify it. I request permission to do so as it is an unfinished work. Thanks

Unless I'm doing something wrong, I believe that in the ISO images the modules of the June release are mixed with those of the July release.

I've tried with the XFCE and CINNAMON ISO's.

Sorry, but for general users this limit to 43800 minutes or 30 days.
But if community don't mind I can make you a moderator of the forum Nemesis Arch based Porteus (only).
I want to hear opinion.

BTW thanks for your contribution to Nemesis Arch based Porteus.

I don't ask for more, but if someone feels uncomfortable, it doesn't matter. For my part I think it would avoid a lot of confusion as it has happened in this case, especially due to different languages and time zones.

Thanks

i think there's a couple of things going on here: it seems procps-ng(package of 'free') update(to 4.0.3) has changed the way free measures ram usage..
if you use eg. btop to see ram usage, there's a slight increase between versions 23.06 and 23.07(see also the per proc usage) but nowhere near the doubling seen with free.
you can sort of see it there with free figures above too, the 'available' amount doesn't change that greatly: 23 mb difference..
