Additional update, the scanner also works, just install the package from aur “canon-pixma-mg5500-complete” which includes both printer and scanner drivers.
With the printer I am using guteprint while the scanner I tried xsane and it scans (I have not yet tried printing with these drivers instead of guteprint).
So the printer so far doesn't seem like a bad purchase, except that I have to send it back because it has a defect and doesn't print the end of the sheet...
