can't install over internal hd

Post#1 by vinnie » 10 Oct 2024, 04:43

I opened a new topic because I think this might be a long thing.

Trying to be brief, i was trying the new version of nemesis from an external usb storage without any problems, but when i tried to do the same procedure on an internal disk partition, it won't boot.
This is the error returned to me at boot:
"Missing operating system.
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"
The installation had been canonical, /mnt/sda2 partitioned as ext4, I copy all the contents of the iso inside the partition, start the installation script and give it “ok”.

The funny thing is that if I try to boot from the usb nemesis boot but it loads the modules that are in sda2 and no longer the ones in the usb (which is a behavior I don't really like since I had specified from=UUID:abcd in the configurations of the usb drive).

I also tried manually installing extlinux to sda2 without any result.

it could be a hardware/bios problem since the old nemesis is installed on the laptop's internal drive however, I don't know what tests to do anymore.

Hi vinnie

Check that the partition is flagged "boot" in GParted or other manager.

Good luck

What boot manager do you have: grub2, grub4dos or something else?
Just post here your configuration menu from internal and external storage (menu.lst or grub.cfg)

I had done more than one test, the first time instead of giving me the missing OS error it showed me a blank black screen with an infinite prompt at the first character.
Then I had done what you said and it had given me the above error.
However then I did several partition formats, I think the bootable option remained active however I will check.

None of those, I should say "extlinux" which I think is what the “Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com” script installs on the disk.
The configurations left all standard (precisely I only added the cheatcode "from").
It should work that way without installing any additional boot manager (like grub) because on the laptop it works that way on the internal disk.

hi, are all the files into the directory especially nemesis.sgn, put the key on the notebook and like root on terminal fdisk -l so you can see if the internal hd is the target, the cheatcode from i have used it a lot with slax and you can try make a directory inside the hd put the nemesis system into the directory and with the from cheatcode check the path of the directory i don't know if work, if you have two system that are clone you have always trouble when you boot maybe the uuid append can solve this, also the save.dat you have to append the real path and when i have done it i have put into the key root tree, when you boot system first thing is the save.dat integrity if fail the system start without changes,

I replied to this message here: su aur e nemesis (Post by vinnie #100797)
the reason is that is that yours is a very condensed answer, and I think I could make mistakes in understanding everything you said. So to avoid confusing others as well, I preferred to answer in Italian.

How are you telling the laptop to boot the USB drive rather than the hard drive? :%)

to choose the boot device I just press a button (in my case it is F11 for both the laptop and the other computer) that shows the boot menu.
That button depends on the computer being used, though.
However then what happens during boot depends on the distro, so it might not boot (as it happens to me on the other computer when I point to the internal disk) or it might mess up loading modules when there are two equal distros on two different partitions.

i think that the from= cheatcode needs to be in /boot/syslinux/porteus.cfg and some of the suggestions in the /config/cheatcodes are wrong (if this is what you have been doing)
i suppose, what i'd like to know is what is on /sda1?
my understanding is you can't have more than one boot manager (ie. one on one partition(usually the first) that handles booting whatever other partitions you want)
but i may misunderstanding what you're doing.
