Black screen on boot - 2007 Samsung signage

I cannot get Porteus to install on one of the digital signage panels I have at my workplace.
When I try any other linux distro, I have similar difficulty, which I think is related to display resolution. If I use nomodeset on Lubuntu, for instance, I get much further along, but I still can't seem to get a graphical interface to load. I still seem to eventually land on a black screen with blinking cursor in Lubuntu, though I can CTRL-ALT-2 into a terminal and muck about.
The default resolution of the panel is 1366x768.
Is there a way to get Porteus to try that resolution when it boots, or an even lower one? Am I barking up the wrong tree with the display?
