How good is lxqt for you: your impressions

Lxqt is brand new on the linux sphere. It is not completely fully functional. If it could be perfectly tuned under porteus, maybe this could attract some linux user to the distribution, Please give your feedback here.

If you have some knowledge of the lxqt desktop under other distributions like ubuntu, debian ... , give us your comparative analysis.

If you would know of minor improvement that could really make the difference: write them down.

If you have any constructive comments about lxqt: go ahead, spit it out.

Maybe a LXQt forum would be a good idea. Oh wait, someone already asked that http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=132&t=4113 and we see what happened there. Image

 dumb dumb dumb :o

Since LXDE has been dropped as per v3.1, I believe there ought to be a substitute forum for LXQT.

Where do you see that type of concern in Peter's intervention?

-where is the "run" item in the start menu

-pcmanfm-qt is crude: - really, I can't middle-click to open a new tab? I can't even right-click on a drive to open it in a new tab? It's also pretty lame that we can't up-or-downgrade to obtain choices, because pcmanfm-qt is too new

-the new panel is less powerful than lxpanel was, and the widgets in the settings menu take up too much space and aren't as nice as those from the original lxpanel

-now I have to configure in three different places to change the UI, as opposed to the previous two (lxappearance and obconf). Also, obconf looks stripped. I can't look at the themes I want to apply? No preview? Yuck.

These are my first impressions. I like the idea behind LXQT, but I don't think it is feature complete or ready for deployment. Incidentally, the Lubuntu team has made the same decision. LXQT is not there yet.

LXDE is my favorite desktop environment. It kind of sucks that if I want to use Porteus, I'm stuck with a weird experimental DE. I'd like to expect reliability, stability, and functionality from this distro, but LXQT really does not look representative of any of those things yet. Porteus should keep LXQT in the lab and provide releases as alphas to people willing to test. LXDE should be the stable public release until the LXQT team themselves can make a proper incarnation available.

Mmm, I agree to some of that, I miss LXDE, mostly for its stability, now I do like LXQT, I think it will be a very good desktop in 1-3 year, The Most annoying now is the LXQT memory-hang 3-20 times a day, + some graphic-errors that will blurr/scramble letters on screen some time, strange. A restart of X solves that, but then you loose all open terminals and all you work-stuff,..

Also be sure now or in the isoconfigurator to set a GUEST passwd to be able to log in again, after the restart of graphic interface [Ctrl+Alt+Backspace]

The easy bruteforce-fix is to this other memory "stops"/hang/craches is to kill the big ones.
(it is a out of memory problem, but OOM seems to not work (one "feature) is that it actually first crashes my 5Ghz wifi in my old laptop, so it cant fill up with more data! :-) So the first sign of badass memory leek is that I drop the connection at 5Ghz, :-) For some reason 2.4Ghz, still is in the networks-list.

, so Flashplayer or plugin-container, or firefox grow the system at fast rate and the system also dont empty the swap, even it it is not needed at all, and just append more to it.. so when it is full it just hang, pretty hard some times.. and the solution is to try to kill someone.
  • 1. [killall plugin-container]
    2. [killall firefox] Might loose history if Restore Session dont work for some reson, so always try first to right click on tab and select "bookmark all tabs". work like letters and code, image editors that you have active in tabs might or might not be restored.. probably not. also from show all bookmarks -menu "export bookmarks" to stick if you only have the system in ramdisk
    3. [ctrl + alt+ backspace] finally, almost lart hope, hot-restart all, this instantly log out and restart x(?) it will make you loose all active windows, (but not as bad that have to loose all in a clean start from the usb (that might be months old if you forgot that you dont have any disks and have not saved to physical drive for a while.. hehe)) ..,

I agree to the panel/widget stuff isnt ready, it works as in default layout(not the language-stuff, set your kayboard layout with "setxkbmap xx" where xx is your countrys-2 letter-code ,

but dont change anyting else in the desktop/widgets/panel..
the mixer is a bit confusing, i must say. and it dont seem to remember settings.
The battery indicator is wrong, says "charging, 76 %, when it dont, and indicates 50%, (energy rate 0.00W)

also the PCManFM (file manager) have some miss-configs,
the absolutely worst one is that any new user cant delete files, cant delete TO trash in 32bit , =there is no files in trashcan, and it is not possible at all to use the delete key or right click at a file anywhere on the disk, it dont work)
-The workaround that we use is to change in the settings in PCManFM to not use the dysfunct "trash can" at all, then delete will work as you are used to.

But why isnt this *working OK* configuration the default setup in Porteus?
That should be updated in some way, or a release note on the desktop so new users can fix this error at the first start?

To sum it up, I like it! Can be the best desktop for Porteus in some year of fixes,
But it is a "beta".

And it works. But a bit unstable , and the memory problems is the most severe downside.
+several configuration bugs

,,,,,Ah, I found another bug right now:
in copy2ram-mode, 32bit,firefox:
Save a complete webpage to root of my usbstick,
opps, thats not where I like to have it,

1.
I made a new folder/dir to move all saved webpages in to that one: ,
for example folder namne mnt/sdb1/webpages

2.
Move the firefox saved blabla_files -folder first

Result as expected, the folder is moved: /webpages/blabla_files/

3.
now I Try to move in also the main file for that folder in step2:
as this: mnt/sdb1/webpages/blabla.html , that will not work..
"target is the same as source" , or something lite that in a popup box will appear.
EDIT: (I think it is cache-related in some way, as this problem did go away after some hours and I was able to do exactly that move later again..)

another one:
After downloading files
a Klick in firefox download manager at the symbol to the right of a file:
"Open Containing Folder"
,,Will not do THAT in LXQt, and it is anoying and time consuming. :-)

( it instead of the target where the file was saved now will open up the " / " folder. )

All xscreensaver configuration is via the `~/.xscreensaver' file.
Rather than editing that file by hand, just run `xscreensaver-demo':
that program lets you configure the screen saver graphically,
including timeouts, locking, and display modes.

  Just getting started? Try this:

        xscreensaver &
        xscreensaver-demo

For updates, online manual, and FAQ, please see the web page:

@slackermagic:

Welcome on porteus slackermagic. This distribution could really be exactly what you want. The developpers are really near their forum members, which you seldom have in bigger distributions. Or building a module to bonify these flaws might also do the job. So lets see how we can fix these small problems that you mentioned.

How would you do that?

run in the menu is lxqt-runner (the run in the menu of slackermagic) is confirmed not to be functional.
