I am in love, again

I had a SCO UNIX sandbox to help me learn Shell scripting. Then had some Red Hat boxes in the office doing some servers. Kept trying one odd Linux distros from time to time. One that I can recall impressed me was Ubuntu. But even that couldn't inspire me to make Linux my primary OS for everyday use.

Then happened Porteus. And I have to say, for the first time *I strongly feel* I have an OS that is a great alternate to Windows, to the extent that I believe it is *better*.

Till now I have tried two different Porteus versions with two different desktops on three different machines running both live and in a frugal installation. I have to say I am more impressed each passing day.

And to think all this is being made possible by just a few people. Hats off! God bless the people behind Porteus. I love how Porteus has shaped and wish it all the best.

I hope to be able to contribute whatever I can to help Porteus get bigger and better.

Cheers!

*blushes* Image

Thanks so much for the praise. Especially since it's coming from a person working in the IT business. That means a lot to me (and I am only a lowly contributor and forum moderator, only contributed some ideas and only very few lines of actual code), and sure will make fanthom, brokenman and Hamza and all the others doing the most coding work here very happy as well... :)

But you are right: We are indeed a very small community, even when we get praised by users or reviews on a regular basis... We even had the critique of missing notability for our Wikipedia entry... :(

Well, all your hard work is paying off. Don't blush, such praise is genuine as well as very well deserved.

Is there an existing Porteus Wiki? If there is - I can help with simple stuff such as documentation of missing areas. (BTW, I do write/edit pages for my company's internal Wiki.)

@rara:
What we have is porteus faq. It is still good, but has not been currently maintained. Most newcomers do not read thru the faq. Have a look at them:
http://www.porteus.org/faq.html
Maybe a new eye on them could provide an analysis for the needs of a newcomer on porteus.

We try to help new members thru the forum.

However, maybe you can describe your experience or competencies more formally to fanthom and brokenman by adressing a personnal email to them. I imagine that they might retain your services. :D

A wiki would be a good addition indeed. By it's nature it should be more easy to maintain and kept accurate than plain FAQs and such...

Will go through the FAQ, francois. Thanks for pointing to it. And I will see if I can impress the admins

Yes, Rava, a Wiki can be a good addition. However, admins need to take a call based on availability of spare hardware/software capability.

Good question indeed. There are several wiki base software systems, e.g. the wikipedia one, and the wikia one to name the large ones.

And how much server load is there when there are only few edits, but way more read-only-access?

I have no clue about any of that.... but I could ask the folks of my current hometown wiki; they use the wikipedia wiki software, but heavily altered and tweaked, maybe / hopefully they can give me some heads up about a very minimal and sever-load-slim wiki solution...
