Porteus

I am new to Linux, and even newer to Porteus, however, I must say that, so far, I am very impressed with Porteus. It is small, acceptably fast running only on 256k RAM, and full featured, while taking up about 362 MB on my HD (that's pretty small!). Having just gotten the Linux bug, I've tried several versions of Zorin, Ubuntu, and Mint, with varying degrees of success. So far, Porteus has proven very satisfactory. I look forward to seeing how far I can go with it.

Though I hardly know anything about Linux, I've been using Porteus since v2.0 on a very old (12 yrs) box. I'm dual booting with Win98SE !!! (which I hardly use) from an isloloop frugal install, I just keep Win for some programs on it. While I mostly only use it for going on line, Porteus has saved this box which I would probably have thrown out! I have several versions of LXDE and XFCE with different configurations/modules and am amazed at how fast it can go with copy2ram and a swap file on its own partition. With the latest version I still haven't figured out how, or had the time, to install programs with USM as I haven't had the need and also I don't know how to get it to automatically activate the swap on booting, I run the command from the terminal each time. I think that's my bad as I have limited time.

If you have a swap file, porteus should take it into account. There are commnds to see if porteus is using the swap file, see:

Thanks Francois. I have a Porteus.swap of 1.0 GB on a free partition /mnt/sda5 but the OS is on /mnt/sda1. With the command free -m there is no swap so I type swapon /mnt/sda5 Porteus.swap and voilà it activates, not much trouble but would be nice for it to do it automatically.

Have 2 swap partitions, and they come on automatically. Perhaps older version did not look for swap partitions.

From a root terminal: echo swapon >> /etc/rc.d/rc.local

porteus activates swap partitions automatically but not swap files (too many files to check - it would slow down booting).
