PORTEUS - The World's Most Elegant Linux OS

For the last 10 years or more I have been using Windows 7 and every now and then I have installed some Linux operating systems out of curiosity... and over the years I have tried about 20-30 Linux OS systems and I always came back to Windows 7... But two or three Linux OS caught my attention Porteus -Lubuntu - Antix - MX... above all the others... and there came a time when Windows 7 was already too old and I decided to switch to a Linux OS for every day. Porteus - now it is my Linux-Home-Forever.

Since Aug 2013 I been with Porteus v3.0 to Porteus 5.01. In the last month I been using Nemesis Cinnamon. I'm using a Laptop Dell Latitude E6410 with Windows 7 Pro. I want to upgrade it to the fastest CPU and upgrade the Memory from 4gb to 8gb but Ed_P told me it could make Windows stop working because of the upgrade so I haven't did it yet. The Nemesis Cinnamon run looks and add programs supper great. I want to do a software upgrade to Cinnamon but I need to do a memory upgrade but I don't want to lose Windows just in case I need to use it. So try Nemesis Cinnamon to see if you like it. Just let me know if you do.
I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

Jack,
Thank you for writing
As I wrote above, I have already made my choice, but out of respect, I am taking a look out of curiosity, but Porteus is my Linux OS of choice. I have some ideas for some Graphical Adjustments to the Interface of Porteus to make it even more Beautiful than all the other OSes.

Try the Memory upgrade. Easy to do and easy to remove if it doesn't work.

I didn't think about that since I do have a lost or forget memory problem my self. I will try after the first of the year. I will let you know how it works out. Thanks

PORTEUS - The World's Most Elegant Linux OS

Hi!
The soldered NVM drive broke in my all-in-one PC - the solution was to use USB with a ported OS. I tried Puppy, Slax, MX Linux live, but Porteus turned out to be the best - respect to the developers! I think that it could be in demand by inexperienced users if the instructions are unified and the installation and setup are made easier: ideally, make a GUI for Linux and Windows like rufus where in the form of settings and/or a step-by-step wizard with tips from the downloaded .iso and specifying the flash, you could install and configure a working flash drive without picking through configs and reading confusing manuals. But there is confusion: the information in the Official Porteus Installation Guide and USB_INSTALLATION.txt differs (the former should be supplemented with the latter), and the duplications in /porteus/porteus-v5.1-x86_64.cfg and /boot/syslinux/porteus.cfg are unclear - apparently, changes in porteus-v5.1-x86_64.cfg should overlap and supplement porteus.cfg even on the first boot.

Official Porteus Installation Guide
The online guide is indeed outdated, manpower problem, but the instructions in the ISO are current, straight forward and easy to follow. Copy, run, boot. The two config files are independent, one is for the boot menu, one is for optional boot parameters, and yes they both do impact booting. A decade ago the ISO file was built with an online script asking the user what modules they wanted added. But again lost due to manpower.

It's sad that there aren't enough people. The build is very competitive. Is it possible to do the following two simple things for a unified structure and to avoid confusion that I encountered (although I have experience):
- So that the porteus-v5.1-x86_64.cfg settings have priority over the porteus.cfg settings and replace them when loading.
- When the save.dat file is created, after creation, offer to write the path to this file in porteus-v5.1-x86_64.cfg so that you don't have to open Notepad, search for configs and edit manually.

If you want, I will correct the text in the online guid.
