Porteus 5.0 RC2 bug reports

rchase,

Try lspci -k.

Does it show a driver in use? Also run dmesg and look for errors. If it's a firmware problem it will possibly show up.

@Ed_P, you can change this setting in Nemo: Edit > Preferences > Behavior > Executable text files
Thank you fulalas. :good:
Enabling the Executable Text Files' Ask each time option does what I am use to in Cinnamon. Maybe a default in older versions cause I don't remember changing the option?

Why use old kernel 5.4
LTS (Slackware is use it) and supports Nvidia drivers for old video cards.
Better support for wifi dongles with monitor mode and packet injection.

rchase, this is wifi PCI card?
Can you show output of these commands on RC2:

Porteus 5.0 RC2 bug reports

Post#21 by rchase » 10 Aug 2020, 05:57

Instead of periodically saying that whatever is respawning too often and will try again in five minutes, couldn't Porteus log me in and issue startx rather than have me do it? This comes up fairly frequently -- it's no great trouble to sign in and type "startx", but it strikes me that not only is this something that should be able to be accomplished programmatically, it's the sort of glitch that makes Porteus problematic for general use. File this under Porteus bugs maintained through all versions.

What's up with Porteus periodically blanking the screen and closing all my applications? It's happened several times recently on more than one computer and in rc1 and rc2; there's no other indication of any fault.

Porteus 5.0 RC2 bug reports

Post#24 by fulalas » 10 Aug 2020, 06:56

@rchase, this network issue you're facing usually happens when you mix different 000-kernel module and vmlinuz file. Do you mind doing a test? Get another USB stick and copy just the RC2 ISO content and try it.

@Ed_P, the default has been changed, that's why you don't remember enabling it :)

rchase,

You need to run these tests in AlwaysFresh mode, dmesg shows a changes folder being used. It also shows the kernel as 5.1.5 when it should be 5.4.57. which is probably what is causing the issue. It looks like the wrong vmlinuz is being used and there's a mismatch with the kernel modules.

Porteus 5.0 RC2 bug reports

First, I was going to make a retort, then I decided to repeat the test, as suggested, booting in "Always Fresh" mode. I used:

Code: Select all

APPEND nomagic base_only norootcopy utc timezone=America/Denver login=root
and Porteus booted with network access, both with the original kernel and the updated one. I was certain that I had started Porteus without /changes in my previous tests, so I repeated the test with:

Code: Select all

APPEND from=UUID:"3d99f0ce-54f5-48b9-bc1d-5926d0e45f3e"/testPorteus changes=UUID:"3d99f0ce-54f5-48b9-bc1d-5926d0e45f3e"/testPorteus/porteus utc timezone=America/Denver login=root
. First, I double-checked the /porteus folder and discovered to my surprise that /changes had been written anyway; it was empty, but why does Porteus alter the installation at all in "Always Fresh" mode? When I rebooted with the latter APPEND and a completely empty /changes folder, Porteus booted up showing the xfce-blue wallpaper and using the Adwaita-dark theme and Elementary OS dark icons -- with no network access. I tried booting up with "nomagic baseonly norootcopy" and using the save session dialog to replace /porteus/changes, but when I rebooted with "changes=", the desktop displayed the xfce-blue background again, application icons were missing, and I had no network access. I'd like both network access and persistence, please.

Why does Porteus write out /changes at boot? It's obvious that changes need to be made at shutdown, so why is /changes created at boot instead of then? "changes=" should be overridden by the non-functional radio button in the Log Out dialog or by physically turning of the computer or rebooting it, that way, we could rescue installations without having to delete /changes and start over. If changes are being stored in the live file system, what useful purpose is served in writing to the installation medium twice, at boot and at shutdown? Since changes made by the user during the course of the session have to be written out at shutdown anyway, why not defer the creation or updating of /changes on the installation medium until then?

@ rchase
The radio button "Save sessions for future logins" should save open windows
so they do re-appear after a reboot.
Those sessions are stored in ~/.cache/sessions/ and have nothing to do with changes
you make to the system.

also the changes=EXIT or changes-ro cheatcode might be of some interest.

I'd like an answer to my several questions -- with respect to how Porteus makes changes, why is the /changes folder written at boot? It must incorporate changes made by the loading of packages as well as changes I make to my desktop, else why does networking fail the instant I attempt to use persistence, having done nothing else? I've verified that I have network access under Porteus 5.0rc2 with or without using the new kernel; how do I proceed to configure my desktop and make changes persistent? The "change-ro" cheatcode is of zero relevance, so far as I can see; networking breaks because I am trying to save changes -- I'm not repeatedly breaking Porteus doing something else and need to hold off committing changes!
