Porteus v4.0 Installation failed on Linux.

Post#1 by TheCaptain » 26 Aug 2019, 14:05

Hello. I am having trouble installing v4.0, as it fails with error code '3' when I execute the 'Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com' shell script installation file.
I tried this on two linux distros and obtained the same error.
Here is some lines of code from the terminal.

Installing Porteus to /dev/sdb1
WARNING: Make sure this is the right partition before proceeding.

Enter 'ok' to continue or press Ctrlc to exit.

Using extlinux bootloader.
.porteus_installer/installer.com: line 281: 6262 Segmentation fault (core dumped) $bin/extlinux.com -i "$IPT"/syslinux > /dev/null 2>&1

Installation failed with error code '3'.
Please ask for help on the Porteus forum: www.porteus.org/forum
and provide the information from /media/user/Usb/boot/debug.txt

Exiting now...
Partition 2 does not start on physical sector boundary.

Following is the text from the debug.txt file. The filesystem of the usb drive is ext4, and it contains one 5GB partition.
All help is appreciated.

Hi Captain
One thing to try:
unmount the (usb) device, after you copied all the files to it, and mount it
manually at /mnt/sdXN (XN = whatever your device is e.g. sdb1)
you may have to create this folder first if it isn't already there.
When done,
cd into /mnt/sdXN/boot and run the installer. (./Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com)

Donald, thanks for the suggestion.
I tried that, but received the same error.
I also downloaded v5.0 and tried that, but it also returns the error. :wall:

Did you copy all the folders in the ISO to the US drive? porteus, boot and EFI?

usb drive = ext2
Porteus iso on Desktop

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ su
Password:
root@porteus:/home/guest# umount /dev/sdb1
root@porteus:/home/guest# mkdir /mnt/iso
root@porteus:/home/guest# mkdir /mnt/usb
root@porteus:/home/guest# mount -o loop Desktop/Porteus-XFCE-v4.0-x86_64.iso /mnt/iso
mount: /dev/loop6 is write-protected, mounting read-only
root@porteus:/home/guest# mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb
root@porteus:/home/guest# cp -a /mnt/iso/* /mnt/usb/
root@porteus:/home/guest# sync
root@porteus:/home/guest# cd /mnt/usb/boot
root@porteus:/mnt/usb/boot# ./Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com
Verifying archive integrity... All good.

Note
FOR EFI SYSTEMS:
Ensure the first partition is of type FAT32.
a) Copy the EFI, boot and porteus folders onto the FAT32 partition.
You may create a second partition with a linux filesystem for the porteus folder.
If you do so, you need to add the from=/mnt/sdb2 cheatcode to the porteus-v4.0-x86_64.cfg file.
This file is located in the porteus folder.
