Porteus - USM error

S4*:

Have you tried what I did propose in post 83?
Sure I have tried that before realizing you are doing that. USM totally surprises me every time that I use it.
for example I ran usm -u all and here is today's trouble:

Code: Select all

 Starting slackwarepatches database update
Downloading: CHECKSUMS.md5 DONE
Downloading: MANIFEST.bz2 DONE
Downloading: PACKAGES.TXT DONE
Downloading: LIBS.TXT.gz DONE
There was a problem downloading the file:
So I deleted slackwarepatches from /var/usm/ and tried all over again and received the same error.
By the way, what did you mean by other package managers?

[W]hat did you mean by other package managers?
Obviousdly I cannot speak for francois or others.
But unsurprisingly Slackware has its own package managers.

https://docs.slackware.com/slackbook:package_management
https://www.slackbook.org/html/package-management.html
http://go2linux.garron.me/linux/2010/10 ... tions-796/

Quote from the last source:
● installpkg: To install new software, you should previously install the dependencies.
● upgradepkg: To upgrade an installed package to a new version
● removepkg: To remove an installed package you do not want.

[…]
There other tools that really help the new-to-slackware user. These are the ones that are helping me.

● slackpkg
● slapt-get
[what follows are detailed descriptions on the two above]
According to https://stackoverflow.com/questions/283 ... er-linuxes slapt-get is an Slackware implementations of apt-get which is an Debian package manager.

HTH!

Could be that you need to read a little bit about some of these package managers when they not come pre-installed on the Porteus version you use, since they all need some databases to work with, and here setup is a crucial thing.
Cheers!
Yours Rava

Thanks Rava. I tried your suggestion and went back to porteus v4 (xfce) and still get a similar usm error.

Apologies if the issue is an easy fix. I am still learning :-).

Thanks

A good call donald. :good:

When changing the server in /etc/usm/mirrors-slacky.txt bhuyan_ca be sure to comment out the current Europe one. Only one can be active.

Porteus - USM error

Post#97 by bhuyan_ca » 20 Apr 2020, 01:50

HI All,
I have been getting a fatal error LIBS.TXT message for the past few days when try to download the zoom module from the slackonly database.
So far I have tried usm -u all before each attempt but keep getting the same message.
If I try to run in the command line then i get the message below.
Hoping someone an assist me with this.
Thanks in advance !

root@porteus:/home/guest# usm -s zoom
find: `/tmp/xdg-runtime-guest/gvfs': Permission denied

zoom-linux-3.5.352596.0119-x86_64-1_slonly.txz was found in slackonly [not installed]
Packages found: 1

Use: usm -i <package> for more info
Use: usm -g <package> to download

root@porteus:/home/guest# usm -g zoom-linux-3.5.352596.0119-x86_64-1_slonly.txz
find: `/tmp/xdg-runtime-guest/gvfs': Permission denied

Nothing found for: zoom-linux-3.5.352596.0119-x86_64-1_slonly.txz

....fatal error LIBS.TXT message
Nothing found for: zoom-linux-3.5.352596.0119-x86_64-1_slonly.txz
Because zoom-linux-3.5.352596.0119-x86_64-1_slonly.txz is not listed in /var/usm/slackonly/LIBS.TXT

You can either add the file name into LIBS.TXT so usm will get the file (not recommended)
or download the file directly from slackonly.
https://slackonly.com/pub/packages/14.2 ... slonly.txz
and convert it to xzm (right-click > txz2xzm)

Activate the module > it does not run ...
you also need
xcb-util-image-0.4.0-x86_64-2.xzm
and
xcb-util-keysyms-0.4.0-x86_64-2.xzm
via USM

The zoom module places a link in the wrong directory > we will move it:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/home/guest# cd /
root@porteus:/# mv zoom-linux /usr/bin/
zoom should run now.
It did on port-4-x86_64-XFCE

Note:
I could not test the functionality of zoom because no mic/webcam

:hmmm:

Code: Select all

su
pswd

cp /var/usm/slackonly/LIBS.TXT /var/usm/slackonly/LIBS.TXT.bkup
echo zoom-linux-3.5.352596.0119-x86_64-1_slonly.txz >> /var/usm/slackonly/LIBS.TXT
echo xcb-util-image-0.4.0-x86_64-2.txz, xcb-util-keysyms-0.4.0-x86_64-2.txz >> /var/usm/slackonly/LIBS.TXT
echo " " >> /var/usm/slackonly/LIBS.TXT

usm -g zoom-linux-3.5.352596.0119-x86_64-1_slonly.txz

cd /
mv zoom-linux /usr/bin
I'll have to try this later to see if it works. My system shows xcb-util-0.4.0-x86_64-2.txz as being installed.

echo zoom-linux-3.5.352596.0119-x86_64-1_slonly.txz >> /var/usm/slackonly/LIBS.TXT
Look at the formatting of the entries in LIBS.TXT
...it has to be a single new line, not added behind an existing one.
It is a dirty "hack" to insert zoom-linux-3.5.352596.0119-x86_64-1_slonly.txz into the LIBS.TXT file
so that USM can download it.
That's why i wrote "not recommended"
But yes, your post convinced me not to mention this "hack" in the future.
echo xcb-util-image-0.4.0-x86_64-2.txz, xcb-util-keysyms-0.4.0-x86_64-2.txz >> /var/usm/slackonly/LIBS.TXT
 don't do this - not needed - makes no sense.

Hey Thanks donald and Ed_p, i downloaded the link and the web version works now :-). I however cannot seem to login on the desktop app using my google login. It asks me to select a program to open the ServiceLogin file. Anyone know what that is? Once again sorry for so many questions. I am really enjoying this flavor of linux and this zoom thing would complete my setup :-) !

I have. A single line for the file, a new single line for dependencies, a blank line if no dependencies, and a blank line at the end.
...it has to be a single new line, not added behind an existing one.
Yup, understood and I will check that. And if it's not I will fix it or restore from the backup file.

Yup. Understood. Not recommend, not impossible, and may solve a problem for a user, and may tweak someone's interest in trying something new. (BTW I don't remember what or who but I think I've done this before, tweaked a LIBS.TXT, but via GUI rather than terminal.)
But yes, your post convinced me not to mention this "hack" in the future.
Relax don. It's not a life or death thing to try. And can be reversed by restoring the backup file.
echo xcb-util-image-0.4.0-x86_64-2.txz, xcb-util-keysyms-0.4.0-x86_64-2.txz >> /var/usm/slackonly/LIBS.TXT

Your prior posting implied they were needed and if they aren't USM won't include them. So no big deal.

So, relax. Have something to drink (alcoholic type) and stay safe.

Some libraries contained in these packages are the dependencies , not the packages themselves.

Try changing the mirror salix is using. Running sesm is a good way to find the fastest.
