Great to hear rchase. I bought me a intel compute stick whilst overseas. My next project is to get Porteus onto it.
Porteus is working amazingly well on my Kangaroo. I have noticed one glitch involving the graphics cursor, which occasionally disappears (although the GUI seems otherwise unbroken); issuing "startx" brings it back (unsurprisingly), but that is no solution. Google Maps has crashed the whole system (not consistently) so that I had to power the Kangaroo off.

Blaze I think I will stick with what slackware-14.2 is using. It is very late in the game to be updating such a large and important component without it being tested and pushed to slackware. I compiled it ok but would still rather wait.

rchase what exactly was the cursor glitch? I've experienced the occasional cursor freeze but haven't been able to track down the cause.

The graphics cursor simply disappears, but icons still highlight when the (now invisible) cursor passes over them, their activity launches when clicked, and there seems to be nothing else amiss in Porteus (based on the most casual observation) -- I have not noticed what occasions this behavior.

Okay, missing icons:

Downloaded the alsa-plugins package from packages.slackware.org and added it, this happens upon launching an app that uses alsa:

Code: Select all

ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused

Download Mate cause it there.
I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

Missing icons give me a rash. If someone could install a common iconset (perhaps adwaita) and see what the missing icons look like it would help me greatly in fixing this.

3.2rc4/5 XFCE 32 Bit

Ping and Traceroute,(for example), does not work if you do not completely turn off the firewall.
I could not even ping my router.

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ ping 192.168.179.1
PING 192.168.179.1 (192.168.179.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- 192.168.179.1 ping statistics ---
0 packets transmitted, 0 received

guest@porteus:~$ traceroute google.com
traceroute to google.com (172.217.16.206), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
send: Operation not permitted

root@porteus:/home/guest# traceroute google.com
traceroute to google.com (172.217.16.206), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
send: Operation not permitted
root@porteus:/home/guest# ping 8.8.8.8
PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- 8.8.8.8 ping statistics ---

If you hover over the firefwall button 'normal' you can see the open ports. raceroute uses random high UDP ports so you will need to pass it an argument to use tcp 80.

Code: Select all

traceroute --tcp www.google.com

I assume the firewall rules have been changed.(For good reason?)
I will check it, because ping, traceroute was possible for guest even if
the firewall was set to "block all".

Code: Select all

guest@localhost:~$ ping -c5 forum.porteus.org
PING forum.porteus.org (198.100.159.110) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 198.100.159.110: icmp_req=1 ttl=49 time=264 ms
64 bytes from 198.100.159.110: icmp_req=2 ttl=49 time=286 ms
64 bytes from 198.100.159.110: icmp_req=3 ttl=49 time=206 ms
64 bytes from 198.100.159.110: icmp_req=4 ttl=49 time=114 ms
64 bytes from 198.100.159.110: icmp_req=5 ttl=49 time=253 ms

--- forum.porteus.org ping statistics ---

Code: Select all

Confirm, if you use another language - this command fixes many problems.

For example:
  • Home directory not accessible: Permission denied”
  • before screenshots are saved in the root directory - now screenshots are saved in the folder 'Изображения'

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# cat ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Загрузки"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Шаблоны"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Общедоступные"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Документы"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Музыка"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Изображения"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Видео"
root@porteus:~# cat ~/.config/user-dirs.locale
ru_RU
root@porteus:~#
BTW via settings of nm-applet in the Cinnamon I disable IPv6 (I set ignore IPv6) and now I have a less Internet randomly disconnects.
