Re: Porteus-v3.2rc3 Bug Reports

Post#16 by northpeter1954 » 10 Jun 2016, 08:09

I have access to two types of PC
1) "always fresh" Intel HD 440:
--- twice (out of >10 tests) "Cinnamon has crashed"; then comes back cleanly;
--- Rc2 was unconditionally stable

2) "always fresh" Radeon 550:
--- Rc2 always looped "Cinnamon has crashed", 2x1280x1020 mode;
---- ctrl-alt-F1 produces fast scroll of stack crashes - 3 entries per crash(is there any way to capture these?)
--- Rc3 "stable" - but claims to be 2x1280x1020 mode though It compresses the screens into the left always 2/3, pixels dropped so that menu only displays "ly" out of ?"Settings Display";
---- mouse tracks "correct" offset, so mouse icon is nowhere near what is highlighted by roll-over for right half of display - basically unusable - (works better if I close my eyes)
---- Any attempt to set display causes hair raising graphics effects which would have blown a glass tub apart
--- ctrl-alt-F1 produces fast scroll of error messages (is there any way to capture these?)

"always fresh" XFCE, Mate "no mixer element found" and SLOW scroll of error messages on ctrl-alt-F1

Two really basic questions...

A)What is the FIRST IPL we should do to "install" Porteus RC3 ?
-- is there (should there be) an "always fresh poll hardware" option that LOGS EVERYTHING we need for problem determination for hardware incompatibilities

B)in the absence of A) what are the set of logs best suited for i) Display Errors; ii) Sound Errors; iii) network errors (not that I have had any ... but ideas would be welcome) ?

all this is a surprise for me, I never had problems with Porteus 3 or 3.1 or Nemesis (apart from missing Config files on Nemesis) - the lack of such installation issues has always been the attraction of Porteus :shock:

Hi
I'll mention it just in case you don't, but I'm guessing you should already know about /var/log directory.

@Evan
Mouse size not working.
Known problem. Try this:
gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.interface cursor-size 48
If you of another way I am all ears.

Shutdown and switch user button doesn't work
Can anyone confirm this. I've
been shutting down ok for weeks.

@ncmprhnsbl
no still no glx with radeon?
Sorry. Will add to next release.

Thanks. Just the /var/log/packages file is doubled

@Bogomips
guiexec activation issue:
Noted. Confirmed.

@jimhoward56
This is more question relating to you upgrading cinnamon to 3.0.2. I noticed that you are not using the newer python3 which Willy Sudiarto is in his git. This is actually the first thing compiled. Could this possibly be reason some features such as cinnamon-menu-editor might be throwing the errors that it is?
Unfortunately no. Recompiled everything under python3 with no difference.

@Blaze
(cinnamon-settings-daemon:863): power-plugin-WARNING **: Unable to inhibit suspend:
After bumping cinnamon to 3.0.5 I am not getting this error anymore. I will upload the ISO for you to check if libxsettings.so is still giving problems.

Don't forget to replace v3.1 on v3.2
This was already done. Justed checked the ISO and the /etc/issue file in 001 is correct.

Bug report from ramd
Can you please get me the device details?

@northpeter1954
A)What is the FIRST IPL we should do to "install" Porteus RC3 ?
Not sure what you mean by this but i'll do my best. When booting the kernel is loaded followed by the initrd.xz which is uncompressed and then linuxrc is run from the ramdisk. You can locate this file after booting at /mnt/live/linuxrc
So I would call this the IPL. Placing the string "debug" on the boot command line allows you to pause the booting procedure at stages.

is there (should there be) an "always fresh poll hardware" option that LOGS EVERYTHING
There is nothing as such. Good idea however anything that would be gleaned is available in the /var/log path

After booting there is a script that collects all hardware info and automatically uploads it to pastebin where you can link to. This can be found in the Porteus Settings Cetnre.

the lack of such installation issues has always been the attraction of Porteus
Am I to understand that you had troubles installing porteus, or hardware issues that were apparent after booting?

@Blaze
Cinnamon rc3 (+rc2) and KDE5 rc3 still unstable for me
Both require hardware acceleration ad unfortunately I don't have access to an nvidia card for testing. Hopefully I will in around another month.

In Cinnamon rc3 - 23 missing dependencies:
There will always be some unresolved libraries as I don't want to pull in qt or gimp just to satisfy a non essential dep.

but after extracting adobe flash player xzm module I dont found library of adobe flash player
I just tested this on rc3 and it works fine. Flash library was located. Can anyone confirm? Also had no trouble with update-firefox or wps-office.
How do i become super user?
Wear your underpants on the outside and put on a cape.

Will check it out.
Noted.
I have done it and corrected icon for txz2xzm.
Ready variant here uca-tweak-by-baze.7z
Copy uca.xml to ~/.config/Thunar/

After bumping cinnamon to 3.0.5 I am not getting this error anymore. I will upload the ISO for you to check if libxsettings.so is still giving problems.
Ok. Thanks.
brokenman wrote:Don't forget to replace v3.1 on v3.2
This was already done. Justed checked the ISO and the /etc/issue file in 001 is correct.
It's strange. I checked /etc/issue and 001-core.xzm and I have Welcome to Porteus v3.1

I send your requisition to him.

Cinnamon rc3 (+rc2) and KDE5 rc3 still unstable for me
Both require hardware acceleration ad unfortunately I don't have access to an nvidia card for testing. Hopefully I will in around another month.
Yep. For it I done nVidia-340.96-patched-porteus-v3.2rc3-x86_64.xzm

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
    GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,
    GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,
root@porteus:~#
and stuck...

At this moment it's main problem for me. (about Cinnamon)
I know that I use old iron (about my pc ASUS P5KC LGA775 socket, 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3 1333 MHz, NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT).
This summer I am planning to upgrade my PC at. I'll buy everything that I need at computeruniverse.net
If you have any recommendations (about configuration of my a new PC) let me know about them.
Thanks.
brokenman wrote:but after extracting adobe flash player xzm module I dont found library of adobe flash player
I just tested this on rc3 and it works fine. Flash library was located. Can anyone confirm? Also had no trouble with update-firefox or wps-office.
I'm recheck it today and yes, with flash player all ok, but update-firefox and update-wps-office does not work for me.

lspci command not working in Cinnamon 64 bit like it does in prior releases.

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ lspci
bash: lspci: command not found
guest@porteus:~$
And a Boot Device of /mnt/isoloop/ without indicating from which physical device the iso is on is kinda useless. imo :(
And yes I know the full path is /mnt/live/mnt/isoloop, which doesn't help either.

So I'm not as crazy as I thought. :no:

There are options in 3.2 Cinnamon to get the command to work but they aren't needed in prior release. I've updated my original report.

Am running in AF mode. So put in rootcopy dir: home/guest/.xinitrc. Boot Cinnamon as usual.

@Evan
Shutdown works perfectly , what i meant was when you go to the shutdown option there is a button to "Switch User" that isn't working for me.
Click it and nothing happens

Thanks for clarification. Will check it out.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but i take it that a user has to enable this option before anything is uploaded to pastebin?
After reading this I see it didn't come out correctly. What I meant was, after you have booted to a desktop environment, you can open Porteus Settings Centre and find the option to upload a log. I didn't mean that this is automatically uploaded after boot.

@Blaze
I have done it and corrected icon for txz2xzm.
Thank you kindly.

It's strange. I checked /etc/issue and 001-core.xzm and I have Welcome to Porteus v3.1
Thanks. I will double check.

@Bogomips
Cannot activate at all in Cinnamon 32 bit using CLI
Sorry for the backwards walk. For now you can take the files from 001-core
/opt/porteus-scripts/{activate,deactivate}
/opt/porteus-scripts/xorg/{xactivate,xdeactivate}

There are files in 003-cinnamon overwriting 001-core. Keep in mind that you may have trouble with menu icons appearing/not appearing after activation. This is what I am trying to overcome in cinnamon.

@Ed_P
lspci command not working in Cinnamon 64 bit like it does in prior releases.
Sorry, but this file is in sbin and as such guest will not have direct access to it. You can create a symlink in /bin if you need it as guest.

And a Boot Device of /mnt/isoloop/ without indicating from which physical device the iso is on is kinda useless. imo
Can you explain why please? From my POV, /mnt/isoloop tells porteus that you booted from an ISO file. After booting, what use does Porteus have knowing where the ISO file resides? More importantly there are certain functions, such as updating modules, that cannot be run after booting from ISO.
How do i become super user?
Wear your underpants on the outside and put on a cape.
