Will no longer boot up

Post#1 by meisthfox » 08 May 2016, 08:58

Hi, I've got Porteus with KDE desktop. I originally set it up with root login without a password. It worked fine for approximately two years.Suddenly it shows a new rectangular login screen that I've never seen before "Welcome to Linux at Porteus".I type in root as username and toor as password. The login screen comes back empty. Help!

@ meisthfox
Seems to be similar to this one.

There might be no "simple" way to solve this.

Yes it does boot in fresh mode ..... Does rc2 equal fresh mode ? And no, I've not changed the video driver.

Sorry, if you have been misled. rc2 is freshest version of Porteus distro. :)

meisthfox, if you have NVIDIA video card you can try this driver for Porteus-v3.2 rc2 x86_64 (kernel version 4.5.3)

I don't know if it makes any difference but I forgot to mention that my Porteus OS is on a USB stick.

A bit much for this novice...Are there any kind of instructions available to do that? Otherwise I think I'll just have to bite the bullet And do a new installation with the latest version And redo all the customization I want.

Fresh mode is one o the boot options when you reach the boot menu. It simply doesn't load all of the extras and changes. If you savefile.dat is corrupted then the easiest thing to do is start again and this time don't use a savefile.dat. Format your USB with a linux file system and avoid the heartache. If you do this, the changes will be stored in a folder and not a file container.
