[SOLVED] In XFCE 3.1, "networking disabled" for guest

Please reproduce your error on a second machine before posting, and check the error by running without saved changes or extra modules (See FAQ No. 13, "How to report a bug"). For unstable Porteus versions (alpha, beta, rc) please use the relevant thread in our "Development" section.

Re: FAA In XFCE 3.1, "networking disabled" for guest

For the record: One of the most important reasons I would like to first boot into a non-privileged user and then start X windows from there is that I usually have a few non-privileged user accounts and would like each to be able to access X windows normally and have full functionality. Again, this worked just fine until ver. 3.1. I don't think I'm the only one who likes having a few users accounts enabled to get online with a web browser, etc. Perhaps it would be useful to try and fix this newly emerged problem that, in my humble opinion, is to be considered a bug. Perhaps it would be just a matter of looking into it and tweaking a script or two to be able to reinstate this functionality that is now lost with ver. 3.1. It would be useful because any standard linux system is expected to work this way. Just my 2 cents.

EDIT: After reading the material pointed to by the links posted by sunnysideofthesun below, I realized this problem is not Porteus-script related, but rather a Policy Kit bug probably introduced by the polkit-gnome-0.102 GTK+ authentication agent for polkit by 1jay introduced in Porteus v. 3.1, since both Porteus 3.0 and 3.1 have the same polkit-0.105 package, the only change between the two versions as far as polkit packages being the above-mentioned authentication agent. Starting x windows from console by an unprivileged user with 'startxfce4 --with-ck-launch' (as suggested by sunnysideofthesun, below) rather than with 'startx' (the usually preferred way to do it) cures this bug.

Yes, I have tried it on virtual machine booting from iso, then selecting text mode in menu (without editing any .cfg file, just as it is).
Login guest, password guest, startx -> xfce without network manager.
Reboot, text mode, login guest, password guest, startxfce4 --with-ck-launch -> xfce automatically configures ethernet thru dhcp, icon of network connection in tray with ability to edit and add connections.
Too bad it doesn't work for you.

Actually, you are right! THANKS! This finally solves it. Just a few moments ago, I started x windows with 'startxfce4 --with-ck-launch' not only booting from iso, but also on three different laptops with frugal installs with different .cfg files and this has worked each and every time. Network Manager now works just fine for unprivileged users.
I'm really grateful for your input. Your "googling and reading posts from 2012 without understanding what it's all about" really amounts to something and pays big, my friend! :)
(The reason it didn't work for me the first time around is that I mistyped... 'startxfce4 with-ck-launch' instead of 'startxfce4 --with-ck-launch' (the latter being the correct one).
Thanks again!! This solves it.
By the way, your links provide some interesting reading. Next time around I'll follow your example and do some googling myself..

Maybe you should not write solved. Usually fanthom pursues until full resolution of the problem when possible. But that is your choice.
Hi francois, as you can see this is now solved thanks to sunnysideofthesun.
You might want to suggest including this solution in the docs, as I'm sure many other Porteus users puzzled by this change will really appreciate knowing about this simple way to get back the seemingly lost NM functionality for non-privileged users booting into runlevel 3 before starting X windows.

EDIT: Or perhaps an update with some aliasing 'startx'='startxfce4 --with-ck-launch' would be more appropriate?
