If you don't answer my questions I can't troubleshoot this.

Which version of Porteus? (desktop too)
Does it happen in always fresh mode?
What package were you processing when the error occurred.

If I don't have enough information to troubleshoot a report, I can't reproduce it and therefore can't fix it.

desktop latest porteus 64bit lxde version and as I told you happens in fresh mode too.
anotherthing would be the message telling me to add fsck to my next boot everytime I reboot or shutdown porteus

You didn't mention fresh mode anywhere. In addition you still haven't answered all my questions. What package were you processing when the error occurred?

I need as much info as possible to try to reproduce this. Thanks for the bug report.

ok; today I wanted to install ntp and It didn't do anything. I tested another software and another nothing. I went to command line and worked with usm there. every package I issued there terminated with that error.
then I went to sourceforge and downloaded usm 3.1.7 and clicked on it and installed it. usm -v says 3.1.7. but there error still exists.

Thanks. Will check it out.

EDIT:
I just booted into Porteus-v3.0.1-lxde 64bit and downloaded the usm-3.1.7-noarch-1.txz file from sourceforge and installed it. Updated the database. Searched for gimp and had no problems at all.

Perhaps you could give me the output (as root) of: usm -i

Also do you have any files in the 'rootcopy' folder on your install device?

Can anybody else reproduce this error in Porteus v3.0.1?

Thanks.

Current platform: Porteus-v3.0

If you downloaded porteus from the iso wizard 3 weeks ago you should be using v3.0.1
Check that you don't have another folder on your HD or boot device that porteus may be booting from.

In any case I would suggest upgrading to v3.0.1 or even the latest 3.1rc1 version (no lxde sorry) from http://build.porteus.org/rc

The rc build system doesn't provide nvidia binary. is it a way to sort it out while loading it onto usb?

No. Unfortunately the graphics drivers are not offered for rc. They are usually very immature and require patching for the latest kernels which fanthom has to wait for. You can use the drivers from the v3.0.1 version (regular build.porteus.org) if you also use the vmlinuz and initrd.xz from v3.0.1.

@brokenman

Just to clarify a point here. Do you mean vmlinuz+initrd+graphics driver from 3.0.1, and kernel, core, xorg, etc from rc1 will be ok?

rather this:
vmlinuz+000-kernel.xzm+GPU drivers from 3.0.1 and core, xorg, etc from rc1.

Yeah, sorry. I meant the kernel, the 000-core.xzm module and the GPU drivers.

Sorry but 3.16 kernel has a problem with Nouveau. it runs the video card FAN pass its normal limit at full speed. the noise is scary.
currently FatDOG and lilblue gentoo have the same problm.
I reported that bug to freedesktop but they wanted more information. their instructions would take too long so I didn't perform them. as staying in that condition wasn't safe.
