lilo for v2.0

hi, fanthom and ahau et al,
this is not a bug but a complain. I tried to use lilo to boot up older computers; I formatted
my usbkey in xfs, jfs, and then reiserfs, but in all cases, I failed to install the lilo bootloader,
the error messages were the same: 'error 5 ...'.
In v2.0, extlinux is the default bootloader but it is not always functional for all hardwares;
worse, lilo cannot be chosen as the prefered bootloader as in v1.2, so I think the usage of v2.0
is crippled indeed.

hi, fanthom,

I downloaded the v2.0 XFCE again, changed all files in syslinux folder as 'executable', and get this error :

Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing Porteus Installer......
Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com: line 393: .porteus_installer-2.0/installer.com: Permission denied

I also tried to replace the original installer with the one you gave. but got error message said md5sum wrong.

I use reiserfs in order to use lilo. thanks for help.

a) please mount usb stick manually in /mnt/sdXY. i'm worrying than hotplugging in XFCE (udisks2) is messing something with perms
b) navigate to /mnt/sdXY/boot and run the installer as root

let me know how it goes.

hi, fanthom,
Done. I run the installer in LMDE (mint Debian), without any problem, lilo is installed; The
Debian squeeze didn't work well.
The second booting is quick and successful; but the first lilo booting failed after showing 'login';
error msg : porteus login /etc/rc.d/rc.4:line 15 exec. xdm no found ..... INIT Id 'x1' respawing too fast,
disable for 5 minutes " long wait.... ctrl+alt+del
Finally I am in v2.0. Thanks

hi, Ahau,

I tried to use bootloader lilo and met some troubles. I gave up lilo and followed your tutorial and installed
grub successfully. Grub booted xfce v2.0 has the same problem with that booted with lilo. It worked well on
one computer; and was okay on other computer, then I adjusted the display resolution, and went back to
the first computer and the system stopped after 'login' was shown, and left a black screen; then it works only
one the second computer now, as if it is not 'portable' any more. This symptom is not in v1.2.
Two other little problems:
* 'super user mode - thunar' does not work, error message: dbus-launch, command passed is invalid'
* 'logout' --'restart' and 'shutdown' are always in dark; command 'shutdown now' does not work either, but
'su poweroff' is okay.
It would be wonderful if these are solved.
thanks !

Hi Seq_Res,

Would you please run 'psinfo' and post the report to pastebin.com, with a link here?

This sounds like the dbus and consolekit sessions are not being started properly. Are you booting into text mode first and then running startx or starxfce4, or are you booting directly to XFCE? Please test this in always fresh mode as well.

It sounds like the video settings you are saving on one computer aren't compatible with the others, most likely this would be something to do with the newer xorg server or the video driver changes we've implemented since 1.2. Please let us know what video cards are in these machines and what drivers porteus is using for them (use always fresh mode here so they are autodetected). You may need to create a module for the settings on the second computer, put it in /porteus/optional, and load it with the "load=" cheat when booting on that machine.
