Porteus

Not really a bug report, still, me thinks this is the most appropriate place to post the question.

I have a very outdated sub-notebook called Samsung Q40 - very low on RAM, only a mono-core CPU, it's graphics card needs main memory RAM for its use, you get the drift. Still, using it via Porteus 4.0i586 and only opening a few tabs in Palemoon (officially the PM version I use [ palemoon_29.4.2-1.gtk2_i386 for Porteus 4.0 by Rava ] is not even available via palemoon's own page since they dropped the i586 versions years ago - telling me to "switch to x86-64" - but not giving me the ability to do so on a mono-core CPU PC. ) makes it pleasant to work with.

Anyhow, aside from testing it, is there a chance 5.0i586 would perform better than 4.0? Or at least be as performant as 4.0?

Well, the latest Firefox 105 is supposed to have much better memory handling under tight conditions in Windows and even Linux.

I got 105 from the Porteus servers and seems to be ok. I also turn off a lot of the fluff, and run with just a few tabs at most.

Maybe give the latest 105 a try on 4.0 and 5.0 and see how it runs?

nanZor , I read on the Palemoon forum that the newest Firefox manages to outperform Palemoon, and it's done via a myriad of tricks and cheats… Still, I will give it a try.

How do you do that?
I like Palemoon since I do not like the GUI of the more modern browsers, when I want more screen for the web page content, I press F11 and have Palemoon in Full Screen mode.

I choose Debian and not Ubuntu, but then which variant of the OS to choose from? Does one of you fine gents happen to know which of these OS variants currently is the nearest to the base of Porteus 4.0 i586 (especially when it comes to the GLIBC)?
I presume both Unstable and Testing should be too new.

And which one to choose for Porteus 5.0 i586
(But I have to set up and also actually run / test Porteus 5.0 i586 on my old machine, and I do not even know if fulalas also provided a i586 module for his most recent XFCE-4.12 module [the x86-64 one is called "003-xfce-4.12-20220725" still its /etc/porteus/003-xfce4.ver reads "003-xfce4.xzm:20220428" ] )

Hi Rava - if you still have that Q40, for kicks you may want to see how LXLE (LXDE custom) performs. You can test it live with 32 or 64 bit - seems to be a clean hobbiest respin of the older style Debian/Lubuntu with low-spec in mind if you wanted to install to the HD. Run the included beachblit, yada yada.

I presume the LXDE custom LXLE was made to be extra slim and extra performative?

only partially, reading the short en.wikipedia LXLE Linux article gives a good overview on what LXLE is about.

It is still only 32 bit; and still in daily use since it is my LAN / WLAN / Wi-Fi hub so to speak; it sits in a different room and gets the best and most reliable Wi-Fi aka Internet connection. And shares its Internet via NetworkManager Applet with the other Porteus on my main machine (currently most recent updates of Port 5.01 x86-6 XFCE)

I would like to see how an 003-lxle.xzm would perform with my i686 Port 3.1 kernel and my Port 4.0 system.

But who would build such a module for an outdated 4.0 32 bit Port?
