Now I am left with no choice for USB notifications in my DE.
my guess is that pcmanfm and pcmanfm-qt don't support this.. even though gvfs might generate such a message, pcmanfm doesn't pass it on(or something like).. regardless of which notification daemon..
generally, in linux, once a usb is unmounted, it's safe to remove... ie. if it's busy writing something, unmounting won't be allowed or at least delayed

Hi Ncmp

You are correct. I did some research and find that it is the file manager that does the job of passing notification to the daemon.

Thanks much everybody for your time in looking into this and for the replies. :) :good:

correct on that?
Since I do like pcmanfm as file manager quite a lot and would be surprised when it indeed doesn't have the ability to pass gvfs generated messages on… or maybe it's an option that needs specifically be enabled at compilation time, and for whatever reason by default that option is disabled?
Cheers!

Thats what I beleive Rava. Other Linux experts can confirm. :)

Becoz, I installed Caja in LXDE and its USB notifications I can see via notification-daemon.

I am trying to test out Nemo which also has USB notification, but not able to do so till now due to being unable to add custom Slackware repo in slapt-get.

Why I am trying to get USB eject notification becoz, USB write mode is Sync and it is good, but for PCmanFm the drawback is after copying is completed to USB, write to USB will still happen in background and if we try to Eject the drive, that will not happen and once Sync completes USB drive will be automatically Ejected and we will not get any notification.

In Nemo, the notification will be shown till the writing is complete during Sync. That is really helpful.

maybe there is a forum that specialises in LXDE and/or pcmanfm where you can ask?

Dunno if this helps you: https://github.com/lxde/pcmanfm

I looked into
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/lxde/ ... nfigure.ac
but there is no "notification" to be found.

I only tried LXDE a few times but I really liked pcmanfm as file manager… overall I am not knowledgable enough to tell you…
Cheers!

Sorry Rava, I moved to Nemo filemanger. I found lot of other options in Nemo than pcmanfm, more over the notfication and copy queue. :)

I hope you also will love it if you explore the features.

Thats what I also believed Ncmp, but that is not the case.

I have a USB 3.1 drive which will get heated when in use. Even if I unmount it and not plug out, it is sill hot. (In Windows, I beleive it is powerd off)

found a command to powerdown the usb after umount - udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sdb

will create a separate topic for this.

no plans for that at this stage.
there is, however, Porteus Settings Centre> update porteus
the second round of updates is now live, with updated packages from slackware-15.0-patches and various bug fixes.

ah, well, not unmounting(because used) and not powering down are two different things..
i have a usb (hard)drive that also doesn't powerdown and i've always just unplugged it(after unmount), with no apparent harm.. perhaps i'm wrong to do so..

Any text file explaining the updates to each package?

Unfortunately Porteus Setting Centre > Porteus Update doesn't work for those of us booting the Porteus ISOs. No indication there are updates, no list of updates, no info about what, why, when, who, etc.

of course, not all of these are relevent..
i'll probably make an announcement, outlining the gist of of the changes.. when time permits.

i didn't look into this issue until after uploading the updates, and requires some onboard changes (not just server side) so any fix to this won't be until the next update..
for now, i suggest ISO booters pay close attention to the forum, and the mirrors ($ARCH/Porteus-v5.0/updates/core) for changes.

I think the http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/dl.p ... pdates.txt file should be able to be displayed by Porteus Update before saying the ISO can't be updated. And a more elaborate http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/dl.p ... pdates.txt file could list the major change in each module's update and be displayed by Porteus Update before saying the ISO can't be updated and would be easier to be impliment without major onboard or server side changes.

In searching thru the http://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/ ... ngeLog.txt file I found no references to 001-core.xzm, 002-xorg.xzm or 003-cinnamon.xzm files that Porteus uses.

IMPORTANT UPDATE
I kept the tab with the wget -r as mentioned below open… and only realized it started downloading all other folders as well.
So just using "wget -r" is not recommended at all, you have to specify the maximum recursion depth as well… no time to test that out for you, better either find a post on here that explains it or somewhere on the intertubes like a "wget linux HOW-TO recurse downloading".

Code: Select all

-l, --level=NUMBER maximum recursion depth (inf or 0 for infinite)

I see there a "Porteus Updater" - could it be that this is what you meant?

Added in 2 minutes 14 seconds:
Trying "Porteus Updater" I get this

Code: Select all

 Starting checks ...
[OK] Server: http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/porteus/
[OK] Architecture: x86_64
[OK] User is root
[OK] Distro is Porteus
[OK] Base folder is writable
[ERROR] An internet connection is required.
As you can see by me posting this, I do have "An internet connection"… how to debug this?

Added in 1 minute 3 seconds:
Could be the same issue I reported some weeks prior, that http://ftp.nluug.nl seems not to have the 00?- updates at all.

Added in 2 minutes 43 seconds:
but as often as I run fastest-mirror it always suggests this

Code: Select all

Would you like to add http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/porteus/ as your main Porteus server? [y/n]
I think I add the 2nd fastest mirror manually to my /etc/porteus.conf and try Porteus Settings Centre > Porteus Updater again.

Added in 2 minutes 1 second:

Code: Select all

 Starting checks ...
[OK] Server: http://ftp.vim.org/ftp/os/Linux/distr/porteus/
[OK] Architecture: x86_64
[OK] User is root
[OK] Distro is Porteus
[OK] Base folder is writable
[ERROR] An internet connection is required.
It still fails, but why? Are there more ways than one in having a internet connection?

Added in 6 minutes 6 seconds:
I tried it manually on http://ftp.vim.org/ftp/os/Linux/distr/p ... teus-v5.0/

http://ftp.vim.org/ftp/os/Linux/distr/p ... s/patches/ is empty
no updates to be found in
http://ftp.vim.org/ftp/os/Linux/distr/p ... 0/modules/

Is http://ftp.vim.org/ by chance also one mirror that lacks the updates?

In http://ftp.vim.org/ftp/os/Linux/distr/p ... teus-v5.0/ itself I tried [DIR] kernel/ , modules/ and updates/
None have updates and none have sub-folders.
Cheers!

It seems like so.

Tried the 3rd fastest mirror that is http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/dl.p ... teus-v5.0/ manually
This one has http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/dl.p ... ates/core/ -
with these sub-folders

Code: Select all

these sub-folders are completely lacking in http://ftp.vim.org/

Trying setting up http://www.mirrorservice.org/ as my mirror via /etc/porteus.conf to try Porteus Settings Centre > Porteus Updater once again.

Whatever method Porteus Settings Centre is using in determining if I have an intertubes connections, it fails.

I now do the manual method. ;)

wget -r is very nice. Though in this case it also downloads the GIFs used for the page layout… but downloading all xzm's with one singe command is still neat.

And speaking about

For users not that knowledgable about wget and e/mybin/linux/porteus/5.0/x86-64/20220924/www.mirrorservice.org/sites/dl.porteus. ... 4specially its

Code: Select all

-r, --recursive specify recursive download
command

I went as guest into this folder of mine on my local harddisk
/mybin/linux/porteus/5.0/x86-64/20220924
where /mybin/ is a symlink that always directs me to the partition and /bin/ folder on that partition that is meant as my main /bin/ storage on that one Porteus PC.
Could be e.g. /mnt/sda2/bin/ or /mnt/sdb4/bin/ or even external harddive like /mnt/sdb4/bin/

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:/mybin/linux/porteus/5.0/x86-64/20220924$ ls -o
-rwxrwxrwx 1 guest 916 2022-10-11 08:43 updates.txt
drwxrwxrwx 1 guest 440 2022-10-11 08:36 www.mirrorservice.org
The updates.txt I manually saved in there via my Palemoon browser.

And www.mirrorservice.org is only the beginning of how wget -r manages such recursive downloads.

e.g. this folder

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:/mybin/linux/porteus/5.0/x86-64/20220924$ ls -o www.mirrorservice.org/sites/
total 96

could get you headaches … but fret not, most are almost empty, it is just the way wget does it when not specifying any more than just "-r"
The only one with larger files in it is this one:

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:/mybin/linux/porteus/5.0/x86-64/20220924/www.mirrorservice.org/sites$ du -sm dl.porteus.org/
430	dl.porteus.org/
Now deeper down the rabbit hole we go…

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:/mybin/linux/porteus/5.0/x86-64/20220924/$ cd /mybin/linux/porteus/5.0/x86-64/20220924/www.mirrorservice.org/sites/dl.porteus.org/x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/updates/core/20220924

So in the end, you see that the xzm's lazy me wanted all with one single command are in this mouthful of path:

Code: Select all

/mybin/linux/porteus/5.0/x86-64/20220924/www.mirrorservice.org/sites/dl.porteus.org/x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/updates/core/20220924/
:D

(Sadly, phpbb thinks the above path even when one single word is partially an URL and breaks it up at the www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ part)

Don't ask me what's with all these "index.html?C=" files that are not viewable when visiting that page with a browser.

Added in 25 minutes 33 seconds:
In the end I moved the files into a more sane folder hierarchy of
/mybin/linux/porteus/5.0/x86-64/updates_core/20220924
( I decided to use one folder called updates_core since for now there is only the folder core/ in updates/ and I will change that into updates/core if there ever is a 2nd folder in updates/ in the future )
Cheers!
Yours Rava

there is, however, Porteus Settings Centre> update porteus
the second round of updates is now live, with updated packages from slackware-15.0-patches and various bug fixes.
Not sure if I need to update as I have no issues... The choice is removed by the updater not working anyway :)
