For those that prefer the full blown gnome3 (i don't like it much) i will release my version of Porteus Angry Gnome (as time permits) which is a fully blown gnome3 desktop including gnome-shell all the bells and whistles. Stay tuned. Perhaps it will include a cinnamon desktop for those that preferred the gnome2 look.

I'm liking the Fat Gnome! Will be very interested in the Cinnamon - tried it out on Linux Mint recently and was very happy with it. The only draw back appears is the eventual footprint.

Was testing the Fat Gnome, noticed that

System Menu -> Preferences -> Main Menu

doesn't work. Clicking on it does nothing. Otherwise this is extremely good!

From a console please run: mate-menu-editor just to see if there is a missing library.

The command "mate-menu-editor" doesn't exist.

I checked /var/log/packages and found mate-menu-editor-1.5.0-i486-1prt. The contents of which don't contain any mate-menu-editor. There is mozo, however when I run it I get:

Code: Select all

mozo

Some other non working stuff,

Applications -> Internet
- Dropbox

Applications -> Porteus
- Porteus FAQ (file:///usr/doc/Porteus-FAQ/index.html not found)

System -> Preferences
- Main Menu

System -> Administration:
- Managed Printing
- Mount drives/filesystems/shares
- Porteus Settings Center
- Porteus Timezone Settings

I checked Dropbox from the command line and it gave pretty much the same error as mozo, the main culprit being :

"IOError: invalid Python installation: unable to open /usr/include/python2.7/pyconfig.h (No such file or directory)"

As it turns out, /usr/include/python2.7 is an empty directory.

Thanks.

Reinstalled python and now menu editor (mozo) and dropbox can be launched. The rest of the non-launchers above still persist.

Checked from command line:

1) Porteus Settings Center (porteus-settings-center from command line) requires root, but root password dialog doesn't pop up.

2) Porteus Timezone Settings (porteus-timeconfig from command line) if run from command line without root, pops up a dialog to say that only root can run. If launched from System->Administration->Porteus Timezone Settings, it doesn't do anything.

3) Manage Printing uses the following command:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/xdg-open http://localhost:631/admin
But if run from the command line it gives this error:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/xdg-open http://localhost:631/admin
Error showing url: No application is registered as handling this file
4) Mount drives/filesystems/shares (mount-manager from command line) requires root, but if run as non-root it gives this error:

Code: Select all

/opt/porteus-scripts/xorg/psu: line 17: unexpected EOF while looking for matching ``'
/opt/porteus-scripts/xorg/psu: line 33: syntax error: unexpected end of file
When run as root from the command line, the above error still comes up but the mount manager gui opens up.

For those apps that require root, when run from the menu, the dialog asking for root password pops up, but for those mentioned above, no dialog asking for root password.

Hope that helps in fixing stuff, sorry I can't contribute more, running around quite a bit now.

Thanks.

hi
some things.
@markds some /usr/include/ are empty, but this is normal in porteus, I am still looking for the includes of kde :D

In Porteus system info, mac address dont show nothing,

i dont like samba server in autostart menu but i fix it in my copy,

why image viewer instead of eye of mate?
why old java 6 instead of java 7.11, 7.11 are fixed of last very important vulnerabilities. :shock:

well for the porteus category, it was already time :D

i cant save the session save in root or dektop like target directory, only outside of aufs, outside of aufs not problems, but outside of aufs forced.

closing system i get an error

Code: Select all

unmounting failed, press any key to drop to the shell or wait 3 sec
i wait 3 min and nothing, i press any key and nothing, this has happened to me once of several, approximately 20

will this be continued or is only an experiment? is good, more that razor, for me.
good and hard work brokenman :beer:

Don't worry about us, I'm waiting to see the official v2 out soon first, and then hopefully with latest mate and then cinnamon.

Thanks for all your work!

Testing out RC2 now and waiting eagerly for v2.0 final.

Any idea how soon the final Fat Gnome3 and Cinnamon will follow Porteus v2.0 final?

Was reading the other threads and there seems to be a request for different DEs.

Has any conclusion been made for modularizing the different DEs so that users can choose or is this too much work in sorting out dependencies and errors? From personal experience making DEs for Slax, I know what a pain this can be.

I've finished recompiling all the mate packages on Porteus. A few little bugs to iron out in source that doesn't build. I will try to push out gnome in the next week. No decision has been made regarding DE, however providing an extra module for gnome (for example) should not upset any other packages. I now have gnome 3.6 running on Porteus so getting the latest cinnamon to run should be within my reach, but i havn't started yet. Crazy busy with work so this stuff gets left until late at night.

Brokenman, I know the feeling - I sneak in a few minutes at the forums in between work and entertaining my 5 year old when I get back home. Late nights are my best friend!
