As a workaround you could place a file in rootcopy.

touch ~/.dmrc
chown guest:guest ~/.dmrc #(or root if home is root)
cp -a --parents ~/.dmrc /path/to/rootcopy

Mate released v1.6 last week so i will be rebuilding shortly.

Expecting giving birth to the next angry-fat gnome version? I am really eager to test it. 8)

It would be very good to have mate on porteus as linux mint (debian based) and manjaro (archlinux based) are providing it. We would be the only lightweight version providing it.

I've provided a module (003-mate.xzm) for both archs in the development section which can be dropped into Porteus v2.1 rc1 just like the other desktops. I've stripped this down so it offers a lot but has a small footprint (~50Mb module). I'd still like to offer the fat gnome edition which contains everything ... it shouldn't be far off. It's just a matter of dropping in all the other applications and uploading.

It works fine already for me, but I will continue further testing, and will report on the mate thread.

Since the inclusion of the mate desktop into the main Porteus options this project has been discontinued and replaced by gnome-3.8
