Porteus ThinClient 5.0.0 - Remmina not working

Post#1 by tarmacalastair » 11 Jun 2020, 11:59

Hi,

I'm completely new to Porteus but have been using Ubuntu for years.

I'm looking to run a thin client to connect to a Windows RDP session for my wife to work from home. I can connect fine using Remmina from various home machines which all run various versions of Ubuntu. Remmina works fine from those machines, using ssh, VNC and RDP.

However, when I try Porteus ThinClient 5.0.0 and Remmina I get nowhere. I have added connections to test machines at home using SSH and VNC.

Using VNC - Remmina reports:
"Failed to create pty device"

Using Remmina to connect to a VNC connection, I briefly see:
Connecting to 'vnc connection-name' and then Remmina just closes with no error messages.

I haven't tried RDP yet as I have no Windows machines at home to test on.

I have tried booting the ISO and installing to HDD on both a physical machine and a VM running in Virtualbox on Ubuntu and I get the same issues with both. I have tried with and without full persistence and with and without 1 month updates.

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks in advance.

Porteus ThinClient 5.0.0 - Remmina not working

Hello tarmacalastair ,

1) SSH issue occurs only when SSH component is not activated in kiosk.
I always have it activated (cant do any debugging without it) that's why this problem went unnoticed until now.

Its fixed so you may download 5.0.0 ThinClient once again.

2) VNC problem occurs on some combination of VNC client and VNC server. Unfortunately fixing it requires upstream action (release of libvnc-0.9.13):
https://github.com/LibVNC/libvncserver/issues/328
https://github.com/LibVNC/libvncserver/issues/376

So we can only wait on the libvnc version bump.

BTW: I have tried Remmina VNC in Xubuntu 20.04 and it also crashes against my x11vnc on the Gentoo box.

Thank you for reporting.

Porteus ThinClient 5.0.0 - Remmina not working

Fantastic, thanks, working now on RDP fine. Just to note:
I still get a disappearing Remmina the first time I try to ssh. If I try again then it seems to work fine.
As you point out, the VNC sessions often don't work with Porteus (can't seem to replicate the problem on my various versions of Remmina installed inside Ubuntu)

Thanks again for a great mini distro.

P.S. I'll try and find the right place to post in the forums for this - is there a 32 bit version of the thin client kiosk? I can find an old version of the normal kiosk but not the thin client one.

"is there a 32 bit version of the thin client kiosk? I can find an old version of the normal kiosk but not the thin client one."
ThinClient was introduced with kiosk 4.1.0.

If you need to run RDP client on some 32bit PCs then i would suggest custom build based on 3.7.0 kiosk with freerdp or rdesktop apps included:

Thanks

Remmina VNC problem is fixed now in the 'automatic updates' channel after bumping the libvncserver library to version 0.9.13:
