4.7 "Server is not accessible or remote file is not present on it" mystery problem

The following can't be a bug, can it?

I've successfully used PK Cloud versions from 4.4 to 4.6, with the same setup procedure I successfully read the remote kiosk config files and devices connect and, if necessary, update, burn and reboot, all quickly and reliably.
I am now mystified why 4.7 Cloud version will verify the remote kiosk config file upon setup but when the device has rebooted I get the error message

Server is not accessible or remote file is not present on it

If I then type in the location of the config file into the browser it immediately displays correctly.
I am not using Porteus server, the config file for 4.7 is located in exactly the same location as all the other PK version config files.
I have compared a 4.6 to a 4.7 config file, line by line using Notepad++, and they are formatted correctly and indentically, apart from the reference to the config file [4.6 points to xyzkiosk46.txt and 4.7 points to xyzkiosk47.txt]

I have downloaded the 4.7 kiosk iso cloud version multiple times, in case there was a corruption.

I have read the troubleshooting section here http://porteus-kiosk.org/server.html#troubleshooting and am, again, working my way through the remote management steps.
I will now try to read the 4.7 config file from a different location also.
edit: didn't make any difference. I still see the same error message.
edit 2: just did the entire process on the same device with pk 4.6 cloud edition, pointing to a xyzkiosk46.txt and the process was perfectly successful.
I also tried the pk cloud edition 4.7 setup, pointing it to xyzkiosk46.txt config file [just in case it was a problem with the xyzkiosk47.txt config file] and got the error message 'Server is not accessible or remote file is not present on it".

Is there something changed/updated on comms modules on 4.7 that doesn't give the OS enough time to discover and read the config file on boot up?

I must have obviously missed something simple but I am at a loss what I am doing wrong.
And, just on the off chance, is the initially generated kiosk config file written with the parameters in the same order as 4.6? Would that even make any difference?

I would be grateful for a 'sanity check' from wiser and experienced forum users.

In the meantime I'll be running the debug option on my 4.7 config file.
edit: done and sent logfile to the very kind people at Porteus.

Hello ch4lk,

Kiosk on which the debug log was generated uses following remote config:

Code: Select all

http://IP-address/kiosk47h.txt
1) Do you have 'kiosk47h.txt' config file on your server?

2) Mind you must have following parameter in your config:

Code: Select all

kiosk_config=http://IP-address/kiosk47h.txt
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Thank you fanthom for looking at the debug logfile. I can appreciate your free time is scarce and precious.
to answer your questions:
1. Yes. it exists
2. The parameter is as recommended.

As I remarked in my OP, if I point PK 4.7 to a previous version's config file, PK 4.7 will also generate the error message about a config file not found.
But If I use PK 4.6 point it to either the latest config file or any config file for that matter, all is well.

So I'm still puzzled.

Especially since, I can point the PK 4.7 browser to the config file's location (after it has finished booting and has displayed the error message) and it will immediately 'see' the file and display it.

Your continued patience and interest is appreciated.

Barring security considerations, would it be helpful to display sections of the config file?

Please contact me on 'support@porteus-kiosk.org' and i'll provide my PK Server details so you could associate your kiosk with it.
Will try to debug this issue over SSH.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Just to let other forum users know, I am getting excellent support from fanthom to debug this issue. The problem is troubleshooting from my end: not allowed to punch a hole in firewall for specific access. And that makes debugging a little tricky. I have been offered an additional workaround which I may pursue.
In the meantime I shall continue to use the excellent PK 4.6 Cloud edition which handles remote management config files flawlessly.

Hi vahiidh,

I think this issue was related to the incorrect proxy pac files and was resolved in 4.8.0 release.
Your problem must be somewhere else.

Please send me your:
a) kiosk config used during installation
b) remote config

to support@porteus-kiosk.org and i'll have a look on them.

Thanks

4.7 "Server is not accessible or remote file is not present on it" mystery problem

Hi, fanthom

thank you for the quick response, I've emailed a link to the remote configuration file.
I'm using the wireless interface for the network connection of the client
I'm wonder if it's possible that the WiFi interface is not ready/connected at the time PK tries to fetch the remote file!!
If that is the case I'm doomed :mega_shok:

4.7 "Server is not accessible or remote file is not present on it" mystery problem

The problem is in your URL syntax as it uses append parameters which are not interpreted by 'wget' (or rather shell) correctly.
I'm working on the fix.

Thank you for reporting.

Added in 47 minutes 16 seconds:
I was wrong - shell correctly applies all parameters.

The problem is that kiosk system appends PCID to the wget request when downloading remote kiosk config:
https://porteus-kiosk.org/faq.html#13

and your https server does not accept additional append parameter in the URL.

Please modify your rules and allow following URL formatting:

Code: Select all

http://domain.com/string?u=kiosk&p=isk?kiosk=PCID
where PCID is correct kiosk ID like: 2-32-467-90-FF

It will work then.

Thank you for the reply,
I'm working on it as per the instruction.
Can you clarify the query below

Code: Select all

http://domain.com/string?u=kiosk&p=isk?kiosk=PCID
OR
http://domain.com/string?u=kiosk&p=isk&kiosk=PCID
(? or & before kiosk)
