Dell Optiplex 380 - No Network [SOLVED]

Greetings,

I would like to run Porteus on an Optiplex 380 , but cannot get internet access via the wizard. it appears to be a driver issue, as neither DHCP or manual IP addressing on a known good network connection will allow the wizard to connect.

My questions -

* Can I load the correct driver into the initial USB installation files?
* Is there a keyboard shortcut for the wizard which will expose additional network config options?

Thanks!

Welcome to porteus forum! :)

Instead of using the wizard use one of the standard built iso:

@caeyrs71
you must be using kiosk edition - is it? if yes then please post kiosk related queries in the kiosk section of the forum:
Porteus Kiosk Edition

to answer you problem:
please upgrade to newly released Porteus Kiosk 3.1.2 which contains a quirk for BCM57780 chipset (i guess that you have it).
if kiosk 3.1.2 wont resolve your issue then please boot any linux on this PC and show me output of the 'lspci -knn' command.

thanks

Hit submit too soon!

Thanks for the responses. Yes, Kiosk version...will move future questions to the Kiosk section of the forum. If an admin wants to move this thread, have at it. :)

I tried 3.1.2 but no success - no network via DHCP or manual IP method. Chipset info doesn't reveal anything exotic, but it appears that the correct drivers are not being loaded.

Is there a standard .iso/non-wizard version of the Kiosk build that will get around this issue?

Cheers.

looks like you really have BCM57780 and my quirk does not work as it should.
please check if this ISO makes any better:

thanks

This worked...thanks for the prompt response!

The only issue I have observed is that the low power/suspend state module does not properly allow the system to wake via keyboard or mouse input, but the power button will wake the system. I will research the proper suspend state mode and try to get it working with keyboard/mouse input.

The functionality is exactly what we need, and I will purchase support for security updates once I have everything working properly.

Cheers!

brilliant - will push this update to next kiosk bugfix release

please check the BIOS settings. i have an option there to allow waking up the system by keyboard/mouse or by using the power button only

i'm glad to hear that :)

Any chance that the custom driver would cause the MD5 checksum to fail during hard drive boot? After hard drive install, I am getting the "detected unauthorized access" error and the system will not boot.

manual kiosk ISO modifications are not allowed when automatic updates (or trial of this service) is enabled. system classifies them as unauthorized and wont let the kiosk booting for security reasons.

BCM57780 fix went into yesterdays ISO respin (silent update without making a version bump) along with reported cups issue so please download 3.1.2 ISO once again and automatic updates should work without problems.

thanks

So, the driver fix is confirmed working. I was unable to achieve a hard disk boot with updates enabled...disabling updates did allow for proper boot and operation of the build.

hmmm.. this is strange. are you sure you have used official 3.1.2 release and not the ISO posted above?
i have pushed BCM fix to automatic updates channel just today:
http://porteus-kiosk.org/changelog-auto ... tml#141023
i have tested it on my PC and everything worked.

please do as follows:
a) boot any linux on this PC and run following command which will wipe your existing kiosk installation from the hard drive:

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX count=1 bs=1M
please replace /dev/sdX with your hard drive letter (probably it will be /dev/sda)
b) download 3.1.2 ISO from here:
http://porteus-kiosk.org/public/Porteus ... 2-i486.iso
c) boot the ISO -> configure your kiosk as normal -> enable free trial of the 'automatic updates' service (or full service if you do not want trial, please remember to send me MAC addresses on sales@porteus-kiosk.org so i can activate them in the database) -> burn the kiosk on you hard drive

after a reboot kiosk must upgrade correctly.
i can guarantee that :)
