Mount partitions in root file system in an hdd install

Porteus is the only distro that id's everything correctly and runs without problems on my new desktop mobo/cpu setup. I have had problems with both Salix and Slack installs and have spent too much time compilng kernels, bricking my bios and in general trying to figure out exactly what's the problem(...

Porteus kernel on new kit works a treat

After 6 years on my desktop it was time for some upgrading. Probably not the most recent hardware but I was looking for at least 3 pci1 slots. MSI77A-GA43 mobo, with intel i5-3450 cpu and GeForce GT440 graphic card. I had both slack-current (last week) and salix 13.37 as a dual boot setup and on eit...

Re: Porteus v1.2 rc2 i486 is ready!

Is nfs on board rc-2? I can't check now and I'm not sure if this usb stick has rc1 or 2 on board. My netbook is definitly rc-1 and there was no nfs. I had to roll up an xzm from a slack pack last week.

Re: Raspberry Pi (Model B)

I've got sucked into the Raspberry Pi (Model B) fad... I've got a case, accessories, distros, and the anticipated unit on order (since early March -- set to arrive in a few days). Be very careful about what you plug into your Pi. I fried mine either using a dodgy soniq powered usb hub and/or pluggi...

[Solved] broadcom wireless on 1.2-RC2

Thanks fanthom,
That worked just fine including the wireless led indicator. I've repartitioned this netbook and am itching to do another frugal install of Porteus on it. With wireless working its time to go chase up Ahau's Xfce-4.10 modules and have a go with them on rc-2

Re: broadcom wireless on 1.2-RC2

Thanks fanthom I'll have a look. I thought perhaps there was something omitted with kernel upgrades in rc 1 and 2 and also because ucode15.fw shipped with 1.1 and the wireless worked. Much later after reading the how to: Before Porteus I had Salix 13.37 installed on the netbook and had the wireless ...

[Solved] broadcom wireless on 1.2-RC2

I had been using 1.1 on an Acer Aspire One 751h. The broadcom wireless (b43) worked without any problem. first time I tried to get a connection to my home lan This is not the case with 1.2-RC2 and dmesg tells me that there is a firmware missmatch. b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode15.fw n...

Re: XFCE - collaboration thread to produce a Porteus module

I simply toggle between the numpad and letter funtions with Fn NumLk My netbook is similar but I imagine numlock on in slim might still cause initial confusion to some people who never use the numlock function on a portable machine. I for one never use it. There are perfectly good number keys in th...

Re: XFCE - collaboration thread to produce a Porteus module

@Justwantin, According your message you are trying to set up a network printer instead of local printer -- Why ? ..... because the netbook I use Porteus on would access printers on a cups server on a linux desktop in the study just like three other computers in our home plus my daughter's boyfriend...

Re: XFCE - collaboration thread to produce a Porteus module

1) With Porteus-Xfce, at first logout, when I tried to log in as root or guest with slim the entered user name was a combo of letters and numbers. I new what the problem was as I had this problem the first time I installed Salix on this netbook. I had without thinking tic'd enable numlocks during po...

Re: XFCE - collaboration thread to produce a Porteus module

G'day, been very busy and haven't had time to catch up until last night. I did a new install using up to date xfce modules and stable Porteus 1.1 on my netbook after test driving on usb stick and removing old setup from hdd. My thanks once again to Ahau for all the good effort. Several things I have...

Re: XFCE - collaboration thread to produce a Porteus module

I've been using this for about a week, just general usage, ebook reader, music/mp3, some stuff in libre office and such. I installed some additional things but have not found anything out of the ordinary to report. Let me know if there is anything specific you'd like me to look at. Mousepad has not ...

Re: XFCE - collaboration thread to produce a Porteus module

I checked it again: 1) Boot with lxde module in base and can automount, log out OK 2) Boot with lxde in optional, no automount but logout OK 3) Boot with lxde in optional then activate lxde (as user) after boot, no automount and at logout a message appears saying "you are not authorised to shutdown"...

Re: XFCE - collaboration thread to produce a Porteus module

folks who want to get rid of lxde completely can do so by adding that second module -- I'll call it xfce-shared-deps.xzm or something. I woder if it is worth it, your extra effort, I mean. Lxde is small anyway. I noted a failure to automount after booting with lxde in optional and then activating i...
