Re: frugal install : sumary of problems and solutions

I guess it's [compression] not essential, but if the files exist as a directory [structure already on the media then there would be no reason for union anyway. Wouldn't it be just a normal linux install? >brokenman ++++++++++++++++ Uhmmm ... well, I may be mixing apples and horse-apples here. Runnin...

Re: frugal install : sumary of problems and solutions

I think the benefits of the compressed state of Porteus are: A smaller footprint Boot to RAM is fast etc., etc. >jayflood ++++++++++++++++++ Something I've been pondering -- is compression =required= for a live distro? Why not just unionfs? To the thread topic: I have both 64bit and 32bit Porteus ru...

Re: where is Porteus 32bit kde4 ?

why did not change Porteus 32bit for kde4 yet !! >KSA_ARAB ++++++++++++++ Let me just cast a vote for an avoiding that unneeded product. I have an older amd64-3000 here with 1gb of memory, have been testing 64-bit distros with kde3 since they first appeared a few years ago, more recently 64b kde4 di...

Re: New distro name

I'll just add a quick note in support of Remix as a name -- that would also show respect for the Slax from which it came. We owe a debt to Tomas' work.

Re: Add printer support & include ghostscript

This of course if size does not matter :), and I believe in this age and times, it should not. >Tonio +++++++++++++ Yes ... count me among those who feel there is little value in sticking to < 200mb. In my years of burning, I have only bought one box of the small cd's, and still have some left. Once...

Re: user convenience

you just need to check md5sum of the ISO image, if it matches then all other components inside the ISO must be ok. >fanthom ++++++++++++++++ Yes, of course that's true. But what I was thinking about was a fairly regular complaint [Slax] that the base system has become corrupted with use. I'm very sk...

Re: user convenience

I like the idea of an md5sum check at boot time although at this stage the user has already unpacked any compressed file and it may not be available on the file system they are using. >jayflood +++++++++++++++++ You know, as I think about it for a minute I realise I'm mixing up two different things....

user convenience

Hi all ... Slax historically is missing a couple things I consider important -- 1) a boot screen item to verify that your media is good -- md5sum checks. It would also be simple to add a text file under /slax [or whatever that comes to be named] with md5sums for the individual items; vmlinuz and ini...
