Re: Forum bugs

If anybody cares, the forum is running horribly slow at midnight here -- taking like 3 minutes to return from adding a post. For most of today the forum section was unreachable.

Re: What was the first computer you put your hands on?

I guess it would depend on the exact definition of "computer" -- my first touch of programmable hardware was data processing machines in the Army in the 1962 era. They also had rotating drum memories, and you programmed them by moving wire jumpers around on patch panels. Really closer to what you'd ...

Re: 2 small bug for Porteus 1.0 x32 beta

I wouldn't exactly call this a bug -- rather, missing pieces. I just today got the 1.0x32 beta, did my usual frugal install, it boots fine. First move, I attempt to compile an nvidia module, but the nvidia run file says it needs to see more kernel source (??) before it can do it. I dl'ed the 'crippl...

Re: Porteus-v1.0-beta-x86_64 is ready :)

rava, do not run startx to get LXDE running. startx is configured to run KDE. >ahau +++++++++++++++++ Ahhh ... but isn't xwmconfig still there and working? It isn't necessary to go all the way back to a reboot to run a different gui. Startx starts X with whatever gui you have told it to run in xwmco...

Re: lzm modules won't all convert?

Back again to this topic -- with an example that I think must illustrate a bug. File is here: http://ponce.cc/testing/porteus.old/modules/multilib/ -- the wine-135*lzm module. So, I d/l that and copy it to some linux filesystem. From my running port64beta, I use Dolphin to navigate to where I copied...

Re: nvidia speed

FWIW, I'm beginning to think that my glxgears issue might be a motherboard failure of some esoteric sort -- latest issue is a bizarre error message when I try to locally compile an nvidia-xx.run file. I get an error "extraction failed", sometimes includes text "caught signal" -- download latest vers...

did you have "composite effects" enabled or disabled during the test? >fanthom

+++++++++++++++

Ahhh ... don't know. Where is that set? I just use default in nvidia-settings, whatever that is.

Re: lzm modules won't all convert?

Following my glxgears complaints ... apparently the slowness I've seen is primarily due to kde4, and it's just a coincidence that all the modern 64-bit distros run kde4. Ran a survey, here are some numbers from my faster box ... Port64, kde4 = 1519 fps Port64, lxde = 2320 fps (53% faster) Nimblex201...

Re: lzm modules won't all convert?

"I was never able to get samba or wine to successfully convert," are they a 64bit versions? please avoid 32bits where possible. if they really are 64bit the please upload lzm somewhere and i'll check what's wrong with them. "In general, 64-bits is a large disappointment to me" are you referring to K...

Re: GIMP

--Ahau Posted after 24 minutes 47 seconds: FYI, this module does not work in v1.0 alpha. I converted it from .lzm to a directory in v09, and then into .xzm in v01, and got missing dependency errors, it looks like I'll have to build it new for v01. I don't have time today, but if you get alpha up and...

Re: lzm modules won't all convert?

@Burninbush dir2xzm should do the job, just in case try lzm2xzm cli conversion tool. BETA should have this feature implemented in 'activation' script. >fanthom ++++++++++++++ Just to report back on this issue -- lzm2xzm conversion was successful for most modules I tried. Don't have a clue why extrac...

[SOLVED] nvidia speed

Again, I dunno if this is a bug or not -- just a request for info maybe. I have various 32bit and 64bit distros installed here on two machines, both have nvidia video hardware. My issue is this: glxgears and other vid benches run ~2x as fast on 32bit linux/kde3 vs 64bit linux/kde4. I have tried both...

Re: [HOWTO] boot from hard disk image file

Well ... I'm not quite getting this -- how is this method better than a simple frugal install? Just extract /porteus and /boot to a subdir, and setup grub4dos to boot /subdir/boot/vmlinuz + initrd.lz. Unzip a slaxsave.dat file for changes. What is gained by all the fussing with an image file? Why is...

lzm modules won't all convert?

I dunno whether this is a bug or not -- playing with Porteus v1.0 x86_64. I found some modules at Hool De Nord's 64-bit repo that I'd like to have, dl'ed 4 of them, all with .lzm extensions. The Porteus uses .xzm extensions, and won't load the .lzm files directly? Tried renaming them to .xzm, but th...

Re: [solved] bootinst.bat error

And I just reinvented another way to screw-up a frugal install -- got the Porteus v1 x86_64 iso and did my usual install -- but it kept reporting that it couldn't find porteus-xx.sgn. The file was obviously there, but the booting kernel script couldn't find it. Turns out that Porteus 64 =is= discern...
