Re: [IMPORTANT] Boot loader for next release.

I've worked out a method for keeping the menu.lst for grub4dos in a subdirectory. The file grldr contains an embedded menu that tells it where to find menu.lst. Here is what that menu looks like: default 0 timeout 1 title find /menu.lst, /boot/grub/menu.lst, /grub/menu.lst errorcheck off configfile ...

Re: [IMPORTANT] Boot loader for next release.

@brokenman- that would be most excellent! I'll have it up in about 12 hours--it's just a menu entry in grub4dos, but I'm on my blackberry only until morning. Posted after 11 hours 22 minutes 4 seconds: Here's the menu.lst I would propose for grub4dos: color blue/green yellow/red white/magenta white/...

Re: [IMPORTANT] Boot loader for next release.

@francois- installing grub should not be as difficult as those links would lead you to believe. Once I get it on my usb stick, I'll write a how-to. Grub4dos install was not hard--the hardest part is knowing how to configure the menu.lst. I tried installing grub on friday, but downloaded source files...

[HOWTO] Install Grub to a USB drive

Note, this HOWTO relates to Grub (legacy), not Grub2 or Grub4dos. I found this thread useful: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1163686 I used 2 USB drives to accomplish this (all commands were used on the first drive, running Porteus, to install grub on the second drive), but this could also...

Re: grubinst - installation tool for USB and HDD for Porteus

That's great, Falcony! I'll test this tomorrow morning, and then see if I can put grub4dos back on the MBR and chainload to grub. What version of grub is this?

Re: Problem with a sound card

For me, the problem was unmuting. I had to run alsamixer, as francois suggests, tab to the speakers, then hit m to unmute the speakers. If there is an (MM) at the bottom of the speakers column, they are muted. Pressing m changes that to (00).

Re: [IMPORTANT] Boot loader for next release.

Thanks, Jay! I'll look into that, though I wonder if it can do it from within the same partition.... I know grubcan chain to grub4dos, but not sure if it can go the other way around.

Re: [IMPORTANT] Boot loader for next release.

i think it's not possible as Windows user wont be able to execute linux code of normal grub, so it wont be possible to add it to the MBR. Windows users must rely on Grub4dos in this case. Ok--my thought was that we might be able to avoid writing grub to the MBR altogether, in the case of windows in...

Re: [IMPORTANT] Boot loader for next release.

@Falcony - great job! Thank you for setting that up! @Ponce - thank you for the info, especially your menu.lst! I just put grub4dos on a USB drive, and was about to tackle the menu.lst. Now, all I have to figure out is how to set it up to boot Porteus when extracted. @fanthom - since most drives are...

[HOWTO] Repair a corrupted flashdrive (w/linux filesystem)

Many thanks to fanthom, who walked me through this process! **Please note, this is only for those working in a linux filesystem, such as ext2 or ext3, not for FAT filesystems** After upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit Porteus on my ext3 usb drive, I was having a number of issues with KDE stalling durin...

Re: sns-tool experimental version

One other piece of feedback on sns-tool--in the version that comes with Porteus v09 (and your experimental version), there are a couple of calls to dolphin at the end of the script (dolphin /root and dolphin $dir &). In 32-bit Porteus, Dolphin is not installed as the file manager, so sns-tool should...

Wow! Really cool, brokenman! Nice work!

The first one is my favorite as well. I like the font with the mirrored effect.
