Re: Need help making a decision
@Fanthom, I did get further through init this time before kernel panic took over. Seems I hung at mounting the root file system. Indications were the script tried all fs variants but was unable to mount. VFS error and some hex along with blinking lights. When I am going through make config my thinki...

Re: Need help making a decision
@Fanthom, Man am I happy to see your post. I was just about to ask what I should be copying over. I built in-kernel support for two of the three possibilities on wifi. Via (non-gpl or very recently gpl) makes the third so I will have to build that in later. Looking at the instructions I didnt have t...

Re: Need help making a decision
Ahhh, This is what I needed. Thank you! In scanning the first 20 lines I already see a few commands that were not in this tutorial: http://porteus.org/info/docs/51-development/91-compilation-and-usage-of-custom-porteus-kernel.html Once I saw initrd getting mounted as a block device I figured that th...

Re: Need help making a decision
Thanks for the quick reply Fanthom! I am actually trying to bypass the xinitrd portion for now. Call it training wheels if you will however this is my first kernel compile and I am on attempt number 8 or so now. Once I get one that works I will try the initrd step too. Hey on a completely unrelated ...

Re: Need help making a decision
Excellent. Think I made a mistake along the way on one or more of my attempts. I really need to name this kernel in the same context that porteus has, no? With the -porteus appended to the version or uname? Also when in makeconfig I see a default size for ramdisk. Should I adjust the default size or...

Re: Need help making a decision
That is seriously good information for me at this stage. Thank you. I will try again with out initrd.xz. I tried out rc-2 last night. It would not boot on amd geode hardware. Indications were that I needed a cpu with pae support. I am not sure if that was intentional or not as Porteus makes a great ...

Re: Need help making a decision
Help, I just failed for the third time in a row. Have yet to produce something that boots based off the instructions here: http://porteus.org/info/docs/51-development/91-compilation-and-usage-of-custom-porteus-kernel.html There is one spot where I needed to loose the .xz extension to off the end of ...

Re: Need help making a decision
Thanks Ahau, I was wondering what tools were being used in those scripts. Well think I made a swing and a miss. After repacking and watching init hang, with many question marks, I remember that my /lib/modules folder did not have a /kernel/drivers/net subfolder. Crossed my fingers running depmod tha...

Re: Need help making a decision
Ahh thank you again. I am a kernel newb but having a good time with this. Another question. I am at the very last part. Making changes to the 000-kernel.xzm. My challenge is that I am in vm ware on another computer on slackware buiding this kernel. The target hardware does not have enough storage sp...

Re: Need help making a decision
Good question on the guest account. If I did want that can I assume I would find a line in ~.bash_profile that looks something like: exec /bin/login -f root </dev/tty1 > /dev/tty1 2>&1 and I could swap out root for guest? Thank you for the options on this. I like the module method for its creativity...

Re: Need help making a decision
@fanthom, Thank you! That should keep me busy for a while. Hey, quick question. Can I do away with the root and guest password portions of init very easily? My tablet hardware does have hard buttons and a d-pad however I only know how to link these to keystrokes / scripts though xmodmap and wont hav...

Re: Need help making a decision
Thank you for your reply brokenman, I agree with you on Porteus being ideal for the task. I was just playing around with the other night and did as you recommended and removed KDE and sure enough there was LXDE on the next boot. Then I got crafty. I knew that I wanted the right click context on the ...

Hi All! Thank you for continuing the Slax effort! My name is daryl and I operate http://webdt.org . We use Slax. Its a community forum centralized around a given hardware set. Most of us there have these little x86 based industrial tablet pc's. As I am an old home automation and home theater install...

kvkbd?
I was surprised when I put Porteus to an SD card and booted it from my Asus EEE Tablet pc. The touchscreen and everything worked right out of the box. I mean everything. Porteus did not ship with an on screen keyboard though. Thinking on it it may behoove one to grab one like florence or xvkbd just ...

Re: The best laptop fitting linux or porteus OS
My first post here. First of all thank you very much for continuing the Slax and or Slax-remix project. "Best" is subject to opinion so I will say that "it" works very well with Porteus. I am typing on an Asus T101MT. It is an EEEpc however this is the larger of the two tablets that Asus offers. The...
