Re: Porteus-v1.0-beta-x86_64 is ready :)

fanthom, could you please add the md5sum to the post where you link to the download? By doing this we remind less experienced Porteus users to check the md5sum after download. I also suggest we put that small detail into some kind of "rulebook" for the Porteus forum "how to post links to Porteus ISO...

[solved] udev instead of KDE's hald-addon

I suggest removing KDE's buggy HALD and for now migrate / include Slax 6.1.2 standard version of udev. It's running anyway, at least in Slax remix it does: bash-4.1# ps ax|grep udev|grep daemon 4677 ? S<s 0:00 /sbin/udevd --daemon 7978 ? S< 0:00 /sbin/udevd --daemon 7979 ? S< 0:00 /sbin/udevd --daem...

[solved] /OS/porteus as default OS hierarchy

Since many of us in here experiment with more than one Porteus version (at least I did so back at the time of Slax - with 6.1.2 pimped running XFCe and the remix one "only" running LXDE...) I suggest adding one more folder hierarchy to where the default Porteus is to be found, either as os/porteus o...

Re: Porteus first run setup

@Rava yes - that's my intention :) do other agrees on this change? Well... I sure do, but with the extra thingy keeping FFx in its own module because of the easier update and it being a vulnerable part of the OS... And I would help you with splitting up the modules for... say, the Porteus 1.0 beta ...

Re: Porteus first run setup

Sorry - it's little bit off topic but important: @Rava and others what about merging 004-kde + 005-kdeapps into 005-kde and create 003-multimedia with moved libs+utils (like mplayer, cdrecord) from kde desktop? it would look like here: 000-kernel 001-core 002-xorg need to export all libs to 003-mul...

Re: Porteus first run setup

kdialog is good looking and functional but i would vote for console as more universal solution. LXDE users are growing in strength and we should also think about other desktops like XFCE. About XFCe... I know, late reply is late... and I wrote the same already in the slax forum... My idea/Suggestio...

Re: Porteus on the net

We need more external references for the wikipedia article, or else it might be deleted! I already mentioned one in the discussion page of the article asking where to put in that link, but at least one more external reference is needed! Porteus (operating system) Talk:Porteus (operating system) (me ...

Re: [HOWTO] boot from hard disk image file

Since I made an error resizing the current notebook's internal harddisk, this technique is tempting. But I ran Porteus 1.0 alpha and it seems it has at least one bug that the old Slax Remix (V08 or V09) also had: running LXDE there was one icon from the quickstart icons (at the panel, just right bes...

I tried to convert a running GIMP sq3 module for Remix V0.9 but get some error about gimp: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_dgettext As soon as I have Porteus 1.0 alpha up and running I will try again with GIMP... Re: [IMPORTANT] Boot loader for next release.

BTW - switching to Porteus-v09 is obligatory as slax-remix is unsupported now - officially :) Ohhhh... kay, then I do that as fast as I manage (which means: it takes a bit since I highly tweaked Slax 6.1.2 and Slax remix and will do so with Porteus as well... and so it takes a bit of time... Anyway...

One question on the "thanks"... why can I thank on posts... like in this thread, but not on others, like in the "non-root-user" thread?

Re: [IMPORTANT] Boot loader for next release.

Speaking about the boot loader... should I post an article of how to install Porteus on a Win7 PC (you know, the Windoze system using a hidden from windoze boot partition at the very beginning...) using NeoGrub, since that means you have to solve some minor issues, and the menu.lst looks different a...

Re: Non-Root-User

for module activation and similar you can write a script using sudo and configure /etc/sudoers to not ask password at all user user=NOPASSWD:/usr/bin/activate *.lzm this is a smaller security issue than run everything as root... You could also open just one TAB or one terminal as root and use activ...
