Re: Recover encrypted save.dat

@fanthom Porteus 2.0 sounds great! I am looking forward to the official release and will check out RC1 in the meantime. Thanks for clarifying that all directories are part of save.dat. If I understand things correctly, save.dat contains only the files that are different from those in the xzm modules...

Re: Recover encrypted save.dat

@fanthom Thank you so much! mloop then xfs_repair worked like a charm, and it only took a few seconds. @brokenman I really wish I could help but my save.dat contains some sensitive information. Sorry :( This said, I can explain how the corruption happened in case you are interested in replicating it...

Re: Recover encrypted save.dat

Thanks brokenman. Unfortunately this returned an error:
root@PartedMagic:/# openssl aes-256-cbc -d -in /media/sdb2/porteus/porteussave.dat -out /tmp/porteussave.dat
enter aes-256-cbc decryption password:
bad magic number

Recover encrypted save.dat

Hello everyone, I just had a hard reset which seems to have corrupted my save.dat file (several messages at boot and shutdown asking me to run xfs_repair). Unfortunately I was not able to perform the recovery neither from the Porteus save.dat utility nor manually with xfs_repair in Parted Magic beca...

Re: Wicd and hidden password

Thanks brokenman, that does help. Do you know if the magic folders are encrypted by any chance? Also it would still be nice to have an interface like the one I proposed anyway, I really don't think it makes sense to keep the process as complicated as it is right now, whether using always fresh mode ...

Re: Wicd and hidden password

On a related note, would it be possible to have a "mini" interface for wicd when the full window is not needed? I often log in in Always Fresh mode and find it a pain to open wicd, select my network, click properties, type the password, click OK, click connect, and close the window. Too many clicks ...

Re: Encrypting save.dat

Thanks fanthom, I will probably follow your suggestion and use Truecrypt containers for specific folders for the time being :). However, please treat this as a feature request and consider adding a simple way to create an encrypted save.dat container in the future (maybe you could check how Puppy Li...

Re: Chrome, Truecrypt, compat32, wine and dependencies

Hi fanthom, Thanks for letting me know. I created the modules on Porteus 1.1 RC2 before the new version of PPM became available; I must say that the new version is a huge improvement and I will probably be using it to install new modules in the future. Nice job Brokenmann! Unfortunately, I tried dow...

Encrypting save.dat

Any recommendations on the best way to do this? I understand Porteus has had some issues with encryption in the past, but what's the current status? If not supported, do you guys think it would be possible to place the save.dat file in a Truecrypt container on the USB drive, then prompt the user for...

Chrome, Truecrypt, compat32, wine and dependencies

Hello everyone, I just finished creating and testing my first set of modules. I elected to place small dependencies (less than 10% of the main program size) within the module itself in order to keep things simple for new users (I remember struggling with dependencies not too long ago). True to the P...

[Solved] Re: Customizable default applications

Thanks everyone,
While not what I originally had in mind, all of you proposed good solutions and workarounds. I didn't know about the mychanges.xzm feature, it's been very useful lately.
Thanks again

Re: Customizable default applications

Thanks for the help everyone! Sorry for the delayed response, it's been a tremendously busy week. brokenman I agree that it is a file association problem and I know how to change file associations manually but I was hoping for a solution that would work in always fresh mode and that would enable me ...

Re: Customizable default applications

@fanthom, thanks for the info, this is more or less what i had in mind but unfortunately i couldn't get it to work. i modified the /opt/porteus-scripts/paths script to prioritize chrome over firefox, deleted /tmp/.browser and restarted my computer. after this, firefox is still the only browser that ...

Customizable default applications

Hey guys, This is more of a feature request than a module request but what I would love to see is an easier way to customize default applications, at least the web browser, text editor and terminal. The way this could be done is by setting up symlinks called "default-browser", "default-texteditor" a...
