Re: Hope it is okay with naive question of size?
"toroot" is not used in version 2.0, it has been replaced with "login=", so use "login=root". We have made this change so that those who want a custom user name (example, "newbody") could use it without having to add another cheatcode just for that (they would use "login=newbody"). Oh thanks. I rea...

Slackware, Slax, Porteus?
Are Porteus a community based Slax or has Porteus changed teh code too much to be seen as a Slax and how are Slax and Porteus related to Slackware. I got a response on another forum that makes me very unsure of how it is. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-distributions-5/slax-porteus-sal...

Hope it is okay with naive question of size?
I've downloaded two iso. Porteus-v2.0-rc1-i486.iso (235MB), Porteus-XFCE-v2.0-rc1-i486.iso (198MB), I am booted in Porteus-v2.0-rc1-i486.iso (235MB), is that one bigger and require more memory and such? The text on DW says Porteus 2.0, a set of Slackware-based live images with a choice of KDE 4, LXD...

Re: [Solved] Can Porteus install itself as grub2 on HD from
Yes logically I should be able to but I have no idea how one does it. I should not ask here because you guys are not into grub2 as I get it. But I need to ask at LinuxMint or at Puppy how to best set up a dual boot. I want puppy to be frugal install on the added ext3 partition so most likely I shoul...

Re: Can Porteus install itself as grub2 on HD from USB?
Thanks I guessed that but felt very unsure so I wanted to ask first. I made use of a frugal install of Linux Mint on a 4GB USB flash and booted that one on the new old computer and told it to make a full install. Very typical for Linux geeks deciding on things it forced ext4 on me without asking whi...

[Solved] Can Porteus install itself as grub2 on HD from USB?
I hope this is the right place. I mean if I set up Porteus to boot from usb can I then boot the usb and tell it to install Porteus as a grub2 install on the ext3 hd wiping out the MsWin that now is defunk due to something whatever. I got this Dell P4 computer from a neighbor that got tired of comput...

Re: Porteus can use Salix repo but how do they differ?
Thanks yes that is a good advice. I could add "Never argue about how to raise kids" that is very sensitive subject too.

Thanks Ahau, I take that in consideration.
I where most likely very vulnerable after the
Anti-Root preaching at Salix forum. I am too sensitive.

Re: Porteus can use Salix repo but how do they differ?
fanthom that is a likely answer seen from a Porteus point of view. Unless you know their reasoning from personal correspondence or you have read them express it that way. But the way they answered me in their forum I rather get the impression they would not like anybody being able to be root ever. O...

Re: Porteus can use Salix repo but how do they differ?
Hamza, my confusing English misleads you. I know that I am root which whoami do confirm. I want to know which version of Porteus I use. I planned to use 1.2 but something went wrong and I went back to an older version. Maybe RC 1 or something. How do I ask this or look in some file for that info? I ...

Re: Porteus can use Salix repo but how do they differ?
Porteus users and Devs/Admins at forum share something with a few other people that has chosen to build Slax variations. Nimblex allow that one are root. Maybe CDLinux too? Parted Magic? It is surprising that Slackware don't like it. Could it have started with the first Dev that created Slax? And he...
