Re: Multiple versions of Porteus

Don't know about Syslinux, but all I know as far as Grub Legacy is concerned, is that kernel and initrd are menu entry commands. And that somewhere along the way (Grub 2?) append has been added, as a continuation of the kernel command line, i.e. continuing the list of kernel boot parameters. If you...

Re: Multiple versions of Porteus

Oh btw, I had tried various order of cheatcodes including what you have suggested. Made no difference. And my current cheatcode that is working also has from cheatcode from ahead of initrd, so this is a non-issue. It's not a question of cheatcode sequence its a question of INITRD being on the APPEN...

Re: Multiple versions of Porteus

Hello rara. I think that you should put initrd= first in the APPEND line. I imagine that porteus folder and its contents is in /Porteus3.1 at the root partition. Thanks francois, I have already got everything working. I will be sharing what worked for me soon. Oh btw, I had tried various order of c...

Re: Multiple versions of Porteus

TFS Rava. Though I have got all 3 versions of Porteus up and running already I will be testing more. It never harms more to learn if you have the time. :D

I will specifically test the Memory disk method with some other lightweight distros such as TCL, DSL and such.

Re: Multiple versions of Porteus

Basically I tried a lot of things, mostly trying to utilize cheatcodes to point Porteus to right folders/files. But cheatcodes don't seem to work (as expected) in all circumstances. Also, I figured, cheatcodes are inconsistent across various Porteus versions. For example, I could only get from_dir c...

Re: Sample Config?

Plus it may be too big and intimidating for majority of users. Why not ask what you would like to achieve?

It's always better to understand what you need to do and go after achieving that rather than try everything you can and see if it helps. Just a suggestion!

Multiple versions of Porteus - How not to do

Gentlemen (and sweet ladies ), I'm back with what I have learned try to work this out. I got things to work out, but after learning a lot of ways how not to do it (which is good in a way, because things working right off the bat doesn't teach you a lot). Re: [How to] Create/change Porteus boot menu splash screen

Oh I should have mentioned that IrfanView is one darling tool of mine.

Code: Select all

irfanview /resize=(640,480) my_splash_image.jpg /convert=porteus.png
That's all that I need to do to have my splash image without ever touching the GUI.

Re: [How to] Create/change Porteus boot menu splash screen

Yes, IrfanView is free for personal use. And it's quite a nifty little tool that punches way above its weight. Lightweight and talented. That's IrfanView for you. Oh yes, it's quite fast as well. Which makes it one of the top 10 windows software I must have on my computer. Working more with Linux, e...

Re: [How to] Create/change Porteus boot menu splash screen

Both are not available as native Linux applications, or are they? Actually, I do include stuff that people from the other world can understand/are more comfortable with. I am a tad considerate for (ex) Windows users. When it comes to your 2nd to-be-made post (the one implementing the image i...

Re: [How to] Create/change Porteus boot menu splash screen

Nicely illustrated, Rava :D

I never really gave mtPaint a serious look. My go to Graphics editors are IrfanView and Photoshop. mtPaint looks like a capable editor, too. Good choice for Porteus. I guess this is good enough editor for simple editing tasks.
