Porteus Kernel Builder

I guess I can make Porteus even faster by building a custom kernel but has anyone done a benchmark comparison to quantify the benefit?

Firefox Developer Edition?

Further probing with ifconfig -a reveals both interfaces use the same MAC. It seems like my wifi card has an unspecified MAC address or its in permanently promiscous mode. Firefox runs faster with 2 processes instead of the default 4 in the 'perfromance prefs' for my P4. I note no improvement select...

Cinnamon install curiousity

@ncmprhnsbl It's as you say, typing exit in the terminal, even when you appear to be on a user account, appears to remove this lingering root. I'm also noting this behavior when you you're on a terminal as a standard user and open the GUI USM or a file directory as root. Closing those windows does n...

Firefox Developer Edition?

@Ed_P The Proxy setting in the network dialog indicates "None". I deleted both network connections in the "Network Connections" preference dialog and rebooted the machine. After the reboot, I checked the Network Preferences and there are still two entries: Wifi (indicated as wlan0) and Wifi (indicat...

Firefox Developer Edition?

@Ed_P You're right, I'm struggling and I shouldn't be. It looks like the problem I've been having with USM and my network connections are hardware related. I have a weird situation on an old Dell E310 (64bit P4 1GB RAM). When I did the installation of 3.2.2 Cinnamon on this box, I had a LAN card in ...

Firefox Developer Edition?

@Ed_P I know, I'm a bit rudimentary but I like to minimize surprises. My experience: Unpacking and building a module from the folder results in an inaccessible Firefox even after you place it in the modules folder and activate it. If you have your USM configured with 'make modules from downloads' un...

Cinnamon install curiousity

Yes, it occurred after a usm update all session in the terminal as root. Why does it linger like that? It seems like a potential security weakness. By the way, note my response in my other thread.

Firefox Developer Edition?

@ncmprhsbl
Thanks, do I need to unpack the .bz2 to a folder first? Will this work if it's in the /tmp/usm or any other directory?

Install JDK/OpenJDK and Avahi?

@Ed_p When I run it from the terminal I get the following: guest@porteus:~$ sh usm/sesm.sh usm/sesm.sh: line 12: $'\r': command not found usm/sesm.sh: line 20: $'\r': command not found usm/sesm.sh: line 24: $'\r': command not found usm/sesm.sh: line 29: syntax error near unexpected token `$'\r'' 'sm...

USM fails to update slackware patches

@Ed_P I couldn't find a 32bit i686 build on the mirrors and the i586 runs like crap on a celeron P4. See this post for more details. Also, the 3.2.2 builds have kernel support for stuff I don't need so is much larger than it needs to be for me. I've been playing with the idea of a custom kernel for ...

On Porteus 3.2.x, entering update-firefox[ in the terminal will retrieve and install either the latest beta or latest stable release of Quantum Firefox but what is the codeline to get the "Developer Edition"?

Cinnamon install curiousity

I am putting together install tutorials for all the Porteus Desktop Environments and am currently playing with Cinnamon 3.2.2. Parts 1 and 2 of my MATE tutorial can be found here . On a Cinnamon fresh install, I changed my root password before enabling my network. I have both WLAN and LAN interfaces...

Starting out in Porteus 3.2.2 (A Guide)

Something I haven't noted in any install guide is a pre-installation analysis. I sort of hint at it in Part 1 of my Mate Install guide linked here but a genuine preamble of which distro best matches your system is missing so here it is: The Porteus distros are now in three major categories; x86_64, ...

USM fails to update slackware patches

With the manually updated mirrors, everything works as it should on 3.2.x but when you use those same repos in 3.1, we have some anomalys. I will list them: 1. There is no slackware patches database in Porteus 3.1 and trying to update it directly via usm fails. 2. The 3.1 i486 distro doesn't ship wi...
