For the first time in a while, a clean run! Now noticed that sbo mirror was indeed being used, so will have to also be included, despite fact only one mirror, but for compleatness. :angel:

In light of above update issue (fatal error with slacky) reckon theres's just one more thing to be done, and that is to have a bad mirrors list, and this will be the icing on the cake! 8)

As there can't be too many bad fast mirrors, thought of having them added to command line, but you never know, So as well. following normal convention, will also look at file .usm/badmirrors.txt, and you takes your picks.
Ed_P wrote:Maybe use this posting viewtopic.php?f=39&t=7000&p=56083#p55999 for denoting scripts' update date & times.
Good idea will do so.

Answer should be none. Can check against the update times. However have updated the end of the preceding (1st Post) of topic.:)
The end of the 1st Post of topic shows:

Code: Select all

Not very helpful. :(
Time for new glasses! Other day clearly missed unmissable usm error in my posting! :twisted: The end of 1st Post now shows summary of following post for easier reference, hopefully.

^ Sorry, late was just about to turn in when saw above post. :sorry:

Learning to take advantage of some bash shortcuts, and the fact that it actualises the command line, thereby allowing tab completion. :good: Also running out of neutral letters:

Code: Select all

g=/home/guest/USM
. $g/sesm.sh
Try it! (see how tab completion on second line works ;) )

:shock:

Please do this as shown, and then repeat replacing q with g 8)

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ q=/home/guest/USM
guest@porteus:~$ . $q/sesm.sh
bash: /home/guest/USM/sesm.sh: No such file or directory
guest@porteus:~$               q=/home/guest/USM
guest@porteus:~$             . $q/sesm.sh
bash: /home/guest/USM/sesm.sh: No such file or directory
guest@porteus:~$ echo '              q=/home/guest/USM' | od -cx

guest@porteus:~$ echo '            . $q/sesm.sh' | od -cx
0000000                                                   .       $   q
           2020    2020    2020    2020    2020    2020    202e    7124
0000020   /   s   e   s   m   .   s   h  \n
           732f    7365    2e6d    6873    000a
0000031

guest@porteus:~$             . $q/sesm.sh
bash: /home/guest/USM/sesm.sh: No such file or directory
and of sourse, let's see what you get,

P.S. Done code block in green, and in pretty colours, but it's all the same, Some characters get gobbled up. Will have to do a quote if you wish to see the output proper.

^ The $q and $g seem to be working fine, however line 15 is first line of code after all comments. So suspect bash looking at windoze line ending: Carriage Return, Line Feed (\r\n). and cannot deal with it. So need to put file into unix format: just \n. There are all sorts of utilities for this. See if that will work.

Anyway try this for size (can't test, bereft of windoze files :():

Code: Select all

source  <(tr -d '\15\32' < $g/sesm.sh)

Great! It worked. The windoze woz the cause. :twisted:

At this point in time the script file has been souirced and the shell functions are available to be called. (Rather than fiddling around with a dot, easier on the eyes and to see what's happening by writing source)

So, this then would have worked:

Code: Select all

g=/home/guest/USM
source  <(tr -d '\15\32' < $g/sesm.sh)
sesm  all

Not what happened when I posted before.

When I executed the sesm.sh script it still errored. If the source command had worked shouldn't the sesm.sh file been fixed? :unknown: It seems that all the source command did was execute the sesm.sh script.

And while I certainly use Windows periodically I rarely/ever use it to write bash scripts. In fact I don't ever recall doing that. :no:

Ok, since I still have a version of the sesm.sh file with the error I tried your new commands.

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ g=/home/guest/USM
guest@porteus:~$ source  <(tr -d '\15\32' < $g/sesmold.sh)
Argument usage: all	[<Toggle Debug: 0/1>]
guest@porteus:~$ sesmold.sh all
bash: sesmold.sh: command not found
guest@porteus:~$ sesm all

Where the heck is the sesm file that is being executed?? When I didn't put the $g variable in front of the sesmold.sh script it wasn't found, but sesm is!! :o

Rapidly becoming bash tutorial taxing my explanatory powers. :roll: Once file's been sourced, we are no longer talking file, but talking memory, would be a simple way to put it.
man.cx/bash wrote:. filename [arguments]
source filename [arguments]
Read and execute commands from filename in the current shell environment and return the exit status of the last command executed from filename.
All the commands in the sourced file sesm.sh would be executed. In this case ithey consist of function definitions followed by just the one command: sesm $*.

Simple example of function definition:

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ tst ()  { echo To be or not to be?; }
guest@porteus:~$ tst
To be or not to be?
guest@porteus:~$ type tst
tst is a function
tst ()
{
    echo To be or not to be?
}

In the same way as explained in above example, sesm was defined as a function upon sourcing, and is now executed like a command. :crazy:

Thank you Bogomips. :friends: For a teenager you're pretty smart. :D

BTW When I tried this earlier it wasn't as helpful as your explanation.
