DiskStation (local multimedia server) disconnecting

I have a disk station (local server for multimedia), it is already setup and should be okay to go.

Now, I did not use it in quite some time.
When I last used it I also had an old laptop, serving as a local IPCop router, and the local network was at http://192.168.7.x

That's also the web address lastpass saved for my DiskStation:
http://192.168.7.173:5000/webman/index.cgi

Now I no longer use the IPCop router, therefore I have no longer a 192.168.7.x local network.

Later I only relied on my provider's router. Currently I don't have local internet access, and therefore no running router. So I connected the DiskStation directly via LAN with the PC Porteus (3.1 x86-64) is running on.

Code: Select all

# ifconfig eth0
eth0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
        inet6 fe80::725a:b6ff:fec1:ebac  prefixlen 64  scopeid 0x20<link>
        ether XX:YY:etcetera txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)
        RX packets 74 bytes 18928 (18.4 KiB)
        RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
        TX packets 107 bytes 19284 (18.8 KiB)
        TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0
How do I translate the inet6 or the ether address given by ifconfig into address that the browser can understand?

Also, the eth0 / the DiskStation gets connected and disconnected all the time.

e.g.:

Code: Select all

Any ideas what's going wrong? The DiskStation is supposed to work as stand-alone media server, but also supposed to work together with a router.

Now, previously I never tried using it without a local router, and now that I have to, it connects and disconnects all the time, without me understanding why.

"reason 'ip-config-unavailable'" is somehow understandable, but it also tells me " device state change: failed -> disconnected (reason 'none')" and "(eth0): deactivating device (reason 'none')"

Really helpful, disconnecting because of reason "none"... </irony>

Any ideas?
Cheers!

Hi Rava

According to this page
http://ipv6-literal.com/
your ipv6 address translates into
IPv6 URL http://[fe80::725a:b6ff:fec1:ebac]

The "ether address" is not an ip, it is a mac address
(ipv4 would show up as inet )

Couldn't you keep the router switched on, even if there is no internet connection,
so that the dhcp server is running?

I thought ether meant ethernet, why don't they call it MAC when it's a MAC? :(

Probably could. I still have it. But now I want to check out how to get it running without any router. Could be I want to use it somewhere else, and there is no router. Or one with just one Net-Cable, and that needs to be used for something else (like the local internet), and therefore I either have to bring my own switch (which I usually not carry around) or use it without router.

Therefore my attempt to get it running without router. :)
Cheers!
